A letter from the author!
Hi Gina,
I am beyond excited to return to your beautiful blog with my second book in the Patroosh series, Patroosh, the Hungry Pelican. Your kind words and love for Patroosh, the Cheeky Pelican a few years ago was greatly appreciated, which makes it even more delightful to introduce you to the latest adventure of these two charming feathered friends.
Using my passion for storytelling and communication, I have brought these hilarious characters to life. Patroosh, the Pelican, and Seamus the Seagull were inspired by our family’s experiences at our local beach. Through their lively adventures, children can learn important values such as kindness, sharing, perseverance, and friendship.
Along with my love for creativity, I have a background in communications and commercial television. I am the founder of Mystery Lane Media, a video production company, and the creator of Patroosh, the Pelican, an online shop. When I’m not busy creating content, I love spending time with my family, which includes my adorable pups and bunnies. Travelling, enjoying the beach, and spending time during story-time are some of my favourite pastimes.
I absolutely love writing children’s picture books. There’s something truly magical about the imaginative world that comes to life during story time. Hearing from families and classrooms who enjoy my books brings me pure joy and gratitude. It’s a dream come true to share my stories and bring happiness to others.
Without further ado, allow me to introduce you to Patroosh the Pelican and Seamus the Seagull as they embark on a lunchtime adventure. I hope you enjoy reading this book as much as I enjoyed writing it. If you know any fussy eaters, I hope this story sparks some fun conversations about their food preferences.
Thank you for hosting me on your blog, and happy reading!
Best wishes,
Renee x

My thoughts on Patroosh, The Hungry Pelican
Patroosh, the Hungry Pelican by Renee James is a charming children’s book that follows the adventures of Patroosh and his seagull companion, Seamus, as they search for the perfect meal at their favorite marina café near the Clarence River in Yamba. The story captures the essence of being peckish and the joy of finding just the right food to satisfy one’s hunger.
The author weaves a delightful narrative as Patroosh and Seamus encounter various dishes, but their picky preferences create amusing obstacles. Patroosh is particularly nitpicky, complaining about onions and peas, while Seamus patiently accompanies him, always ready to help decide. The introduction of Patreesh, Patroosh’s little sister who swoops in and steals his coveted fish and chips, adds a playful twist to the story.
One of the key themes that emerge from the book is perseverance. Patroosh’s initial pickiness hinders his enjoyment of the available food options, but through patience and perseverance, he eventually finds a meal that meets his preferences. This underlying message encourages young readers to be open-minded and willing to try new things, even if they may seem unfamiliar or initially unappealing.
The book’s illustrations are beautifully done, captivating young readers with vibrant colors and detailed depictions of the marina café and its surroundings. The visuals enhance the storytelling experience, allowing children to immerse themselves in the world of Patroosh and Seamus.
Patroosh, the Hungry Pelican is a delightful tale that combines engaging storytelling, important life lessons, and visually stunning illustrations. The book’s message of perseverance and not being too picky will resonate with young readers, while the playful antics of the feathered friends will keep them entertained throughout. It is an excellent choice for children who enjoy stories about animals and food, and it is sure to become a favorite on their bookshelf.
I received a copy of the book for the tour. This review is my honest, unbiased opinion.
