My thoughts on Popper Finds a New Home
Popper Finds a New Home is the first book in the new Popper and Friends series from IL Ritchie.
The illustrations by Yulia Potts are cute and enhance the story, especially for younger readers.
The story is charming and entertaining while emphasizing friendship and family.
The pacing is smooth and though it might be a little wordy for the youngest readers, it makes a nice bedtime tale to help kids unwind.
This book would be a fine addition to any home, daycare, or school library. It’s also quite giftable as it comes in a sturdy oversized hardcover edition.
I received a copy of the book for the tour. This review is my honest, unbiased opinion.

An Interview with IL Ritchie
What was your inspiration for Popper Finds a New Home?
When I was a kid, my dad would talk about a woodpecker in our neighborhood that would peck a metal pole. He would joke that the woodpecker was giving itself an awful headache. I used to think that maybe the woodpecker was communicating with its friends by banging its beak into that metal pole. At some point, I thought that the woodpecker was looking for somewhere to burrow because it needed a new home, and that is how I came up with the idea for the story.
What do you hope children will learn from reading this story?
I believe that it is really important for everyone to have a strong social network between family and friends. I hope children recognize that it is helpful to ask people they know for advice/help. We can all learn a lot from those that are closest to us in our lives.
Do you plan to write more stories and turn this into a series?
Yes, I plan to write more stories about Popper and his friends. I have some more ideas about stories where Popper is going to seek advice/help from his social network. Plus, now that Popper has a new home, he needs to host parties for his family and friends!!
Do you have a favorite character in the story?
It’s tough to choose a favorite, but I’m really partial to the illustration of Filbert (the squirrel). The illustrator that I worked with, Yulia, did such an amazing job! Filbert makes me smile every time I see his chubby cheeks and the acorn tucked under his arm….
