The golden crown casts deadly shadows.
Jacs, now the rightful Queen of Frea, seems to be Queen in title alone. She scrambles to learn the customs and traditions of a Realm she had only read about in books. The Council of Four have her firmly under their thumb, and their ideas for the Queendom are oppressive and outdated. Their knowledge of her mother and Master Leschi’s whereabouts is the only leverage they need to make the new Queen dance to their tune.
Jacs is determined to find those who were taken from her and do what’s right for her Queendom. But in her search for answers, Jacs uncovers a much darker truth from the Queendom’s past that will forever change its future.
Content Rating: PG. Very clean, but there is some brief violence.

An Interview with Jordan H. Bartlett
What can readers hope to learn from your books?
That in all things, be kind. I hope that this series shows that prejudice and division of people based on where they’re born or what gender they are only makes us weaker as a whole. I hope that it makes people think about and reevaluate their own prejudices and how they impact others. I hope my book shows that at the end of the day, people are people. Give one group power and how they shape the world might look different, but there will always be those who are corrupt, and there will always be those fighting for what’s right.
What is your writing process like?
I have to live the story first, so it involves a lot of long walks and vacant stares off into the distance. I need to feel it in my skin, know who my characters will be and learn their hearts. Then I write an outline start to finish, then I start writing my novel and about half way through realize I’ve thrown my outline out the window as the story has been shaped by characters and factors I couldn’t have accounted for, and then it’s back to the outline to reshape and reform the story to fit the new mold.
I wish it were a more elegant process, but I haven’t yet figured out how to stop my side characters from de-railing a perfectly coherent plot! It seems best to simply follow their lead and it’s always led me to greater discoveries.
What’s a fun fact about yourself?
I always struggle with questions like this because I never know what other people are going to think is a fun fact. Here are three: I can’t whistle, I have skydived three times, and I once learned how to work with leather for the sole purpose of making a teacup holster (worth a Google).
What are some go-to books you like to recommend to people?
This list tends to change monthly, but I always recommend The Slow Regard for Silent Things by Patrick Rothfuss (you will need to read Name of the Wind first, but it’s also phenomenal so that’s not a problem), The Power by Naomi Alderman, and The Brass Queen by Elizabeth Chatsworth.
If there is one thing you want readers to remember about you, what would it be?
That I answered my call to adventure.

When an unsettling event occurs in the Queendom of Frean, Jacs, an inventor's apprentice from the Lower Realm, participates in the Contest of Queens to prove that a Queendom is strongest when united.
In a Queendom divided, can one girl unite the realms?Jacs, an inventor's apprentice from the Lower Realm, has only ever dreamed of what the land among the clouds holds. That is until she finds a letter from Connor, an Upperite boy who sends a wooden boat into the abyss, hoping to learn more about the land below. Little does Jacs know, Connor is actually Prince Cornelius of the Queendom of Frea. With wooden boats and hot air balloons, the two begin a secret correspondence that lasts years. But their friendship is divided by a heavily-guarded bridge and an inescapable prejudice.
The strength of their bond was thought to transcend distance and time, but when the royal family visits Jacs' town of Bridgeport, the illusion of peace between the Realms dissolves, and the old feud is reignited.
Now, to save her people, Jacs must infiltrate the Upper Realm and earn her place to compete in the Contest of Queens. She must learn how to survive against the contests' grueling tasks and within a political web she could not have imagined. In a story about friendship, love, bravery, and defying gravity, Jacs will strive to prove that a Queendom is strongest when united.
