Review: I Am Marcus Fox by Bryon Cahill is an outrageous story of tall tales and nearly unbelievable feats. I loved it.
I Am Marcus Fox by Bryon Cahill
Genres: Action, Adventure, African Literature, Psychological Fiction
Rating: 5 of 5 Stars
Synopsis from Amazon:
When I was six, my Momma tossed me out of a low-flying plane.
I’d be lying if I said I didn’t deserve it.
Wrenched from dust-choked, Texas ghost towns and discarded in a lush Zambian forest, Marcus Fox became a welcome member of the fearless tribe that saved him. With the help and guidance of his new people, he learned how to fight for survival, hunt for his supper, and repress the scars of his abandonment. As he grew to premature manhood, familial betrayal came calling once more, leaving him broken and alone, yet again.
With the past never behind him, he’ll venture down a twisty, bone-scattered road in search of the infernal woman who started him on his tortured path. Perhaps she has some passable answer to his one pressing question:
Who is Marcus Fox?

My Review of I Am Marcus Fox by Bryon Cahill
Psychological thriller, comedy, drama, & adventure all rolled into one fantastic story
Are you a lover of tall tales and non-stop adventures? Then this is the book for you!
Cahill’s characters are unique, feisty, and almost surreal. Starting with Marcus Fox all the way down to the dog, every character is extremely well-developed. I was impressed by the thought put into every word of this story.
I spent some time wondering if this could possibly be the truth or was it merely hallucinations from Marcus. Yet, I found it didn’t really matter. I simply needed to keep reading to find out what outlandish adventure would be next.
I ‘m recommending I Am Marcus Fox to lovers of action, adventure, psychological fiction, and great storytelling.

An interview with Bryon Cahill, author of I Am Marcus Fox
How long have you been writing? Do you have a set writing schedule?
I have been writing since the dawn of Time. Truly! On my good days, I try my best to pull myself out of bed and get the writing done prior to Time’s dawn. It hasn’t been easy lately, what with my two, young offspring vying for my unconditional love. They are so tiny, these babes of mine; so sleepy in their wee bodies that they tend to snore through the hour or two just before the day breaks. All I need is the energy and the willpower to beat them to it. I have no idea where it comes from.
In my professional career, I was blessed to have the opportunity to work at Weekly Reader. There, I wrote and edited a literary, educational periodical for middle and high school students. My time spent witing for kids had a huge influence on my creative style.
What inspired you to write in the literary action adventure/psychological thriller genre?
Honestly? My protagonist inspired me. He blasted his high-octane life into my head and poured himself out onto the page. He grabbed me by the ears and demanded, “Listen! My story is electric! Write me!” What choice did I have? I fleshed him out and before I knew what hit me, Marcus had free rein. The man has a larger-than-life personality. That’s putting it mildly.
He’s a modern-day Paul Bunyan braggart and it’s hard to take anything he says without a heaping pile of salt grains. As much as I was honored to tell his tale, I still wonder who he might truly be, beneath it all. He confessed to me once that fiction is stranger than truth. I’m inclined to agree. I may just have to write him a sequel.
In which genre does your life story belong?
Oh, I dunno. Is the kooky text on the back of kids’ cereal boxes considered a genre? Let’s say that.
Do you need silence to write or can you work in any environment?
Omigosh if I could write in any environment, I’d get so much more done. Alas, I need as much silence as is humanly possible. I’ve tried writing with classical music playing, but when I do that my stuff just comes out sounding violiny. It’s all stringy and wavy and disconnected to anything other than the gentle sound of the cherub-like setting. Which, in and of itself is not a bad thing. But it doesn’t ever seem to match what I’m going for… unless I’m writing about a concerto. But I never do.
Were you an avid reader growing up?
Absolutely. As a kid, I would bring books into the big tree in our front yard. I climbed up about midway and sat in this perfect crook between two branches and read for hours on end. It doesn’t sound terribly comfortable but I don’t remember it being anything but joyous. As much as I still love to read, nothing really matches that feeling a child gets when he falls into a book. I wouldn’t recommend that kids go losing themselves high above solid ground, but it worked for me. I survived.
If you could form the ultimate writers’ group, which authors past or present would you invite to join you?
Kurt Vonnegut, George Orwell, Tom Robbins, Stephen King, and William Shakespeare. Yeah, it’s a boy’s club but what’re you gonna do? They’re my boys. I know a lot of people shiver in their literary boots when they hear the Bard’s name thrown around. I still do, too. I’ve always loved him but I recently realized, I’ve actually only read a small handful of his plays. He has 37 masterpieces ya’ll! And that’s not even counting his sonnets!
So, I’ve recently decided to go on a quest to read all of Shakespeare’s theatrical works — one a month for the next three years. It’s a Herculean task that I hope to accomplish. I’m going alphabetically and am well into the first one now: All’s Well That Ends Well. Does it? I’m guessing, yes. I’m also looking forward to charting my progress on my bloggy at (here comes the cheap plug) www.bryoncahill.com. And he sticks the landing, forsooth!
Is there anything you would like my readers to know about you and your book?
“I Am Marcus Fox” is my debut novel for adult readers. It is a literary action adventure/psychological thriller with a twist. What’s the twist? Spoiler alert: The twist is Marcus. As for the future of my writing, I intend to publish many more books for adults as well as younger audiences. It’s not the most ideal business plan. Everything I read suggests that you should keep with one genre. But the majority of my writing experience has been for kids, so I don’t want to deny that creative side. In the coming future, I am very much looking forward to publishing full-length novels for all ages.
