My review of Legends Untold by E Gubbins

Legends Untold is a unique story reimagining several American folklore heroes coming together in a wild adventure.

I’m sure if you were to analyze this book with an eye to structure, point of view, etc., it would come up a bit short. However, if you want a fun tale that only takes an afternoon to read, this is the story for you.

The author gives us one escapade after another from our band of heroes. Every time I recognized a new character, I chuckled out loud. It takes a creative mind to blend them in such an entertaining manner.

Fans of tall-tales will enjoy this quick story. Legends never die, they star in a new adventure story!

Author Interview:

How long have you been writing?

As long as I can remember. In first grade, I wrote down that I wanted to be an “author” when I grew up, for some reason.

What inspired you to write in this genre?

“The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen” was a series of comic books from the late 1990s that was made into a bad movie in 2003. The premise of “League” was tying together a group of fictional characters from different pre-existing works – specifically, works from English authors (Jekyll & Hyde, The Invisible Man, etc.). In my story, I used characters from American works and mixed in real historical figures, so from the outset, it was different in two ways from the inspiration.

Do you have a set writing schedule?

I have a day job, so I write when I can on nights and weekends.

Do you need silence to write, or can you work in any environment?

Silence. But my hearing’s not so good, so it works out well.

What is your most unusual writing quirk?

I tend to break my own rules. I don’t like prologues, but I wrote one in my own book. I guess I don’t like rules, either.

Were you an avid reader growing up?

I read a lot of comic books growing up. Book reading didn’t really take off until after I graduated from college and could read whatever I wanted, as opposed to assignments.

If you could form the ultimate writers’ group, which authors past or present would you invite to join you?

Tim O’Brien, David Foster Wallace, Joyce Carol Oates, Jerry Seinfeld.

Do you snack while writing, and if so, what is your favorite snack?

I don’t snack. I usually drink gin while I write. I think it shows.

Who has influenced your writing the most?

Probably that gin I mentioned. But in terms of authors, there are too many to mention. Everything I’ve read has influenced me.

Is there anything you would like my readers to know about you and your book?

I tried to write it to be accessible to a really wide age range and I’ve gotten good feedback from tweens and 50-year-olds who both enjoyed it. I hope your readers do too.

  1. This sounds really interesting, maybe even something my son would like. We read a series of small biographies last year, one about Annie Oakley, one about Paul Bunyan, and several others.

    • Thanks Lila. It would be a fun book to read together. Every time a new figure from the early 20th century turned up, I laughed. It was quite fun to see how they interacted with each other.
