Review – The Legend of Jake Howell by Charles A. Reap, Jr reads like a memoir, but it’s pure historical fiction.
Title: The Legend of Jake Howell
Author: Charles A. Reap, Jr
Genres: Historical Fiction, Action/Adventure Fiction
My Rating: 5 Stars
Synopsis from Goodreads: When he picked up that shiny stone from the small stream, nine-year-old Jake Howell would not have believed that it would trigger America’s first gold rush and that he would become one of the world’s richest and most admired men.

My Review of The Legend of Jake Howell
5 of 5 Stars
When you finish a historical fiction book and can’t believe it’s not true, you know it’s a great story.
That’s how I felt about The Legend of Jake Howell, like I just read an excellent memoir/biography. The story was engaging, and the characters are well-developed. The descriptions of violence, medical care, morals, and more that are prevalent in the era are accurate.
The book was believable from start to finish. I see the ramifications of greed throughout the storyline.
The epilogue gave the bonus of tying up loose ends, yet left me hungering for more stories about this remarkable family.

Biography and Interview with Charles A Reap, Jr.
I’m formerly a newspaper reporter and columnist, I practiced dentistry, lectured and published two internationally-recognized textbooks on practice management, plus numerous articles and professional papers. I have published two novels, plus two eBooks about dentistry. Also, I published an illustrated children’s eBook which was a Nesta award winner, and I’ve enjoyed a P&E Poll recognition. In addition, I am a stage and film actor, having written screenplays and stage plays. I’ve also composed music. As a hobby, between writings, if you can imagine such a thing, I build wooden and fiberglass sailing and cruising boats.
How long have you been writing?
My father began a weekly newspaper in 1945. Although I became the “back-shop” manager and typesetter and press operator, I also occasionally wrote articles as well as advertisement copy at the age of 14 (10th grade.) Later, as a dentist, I taught/lectured in dental school and wrote and published technical articles.
What inspired you to write in this genre?
I grew up near Charlotte, NC, (Albemarle, NC) near what was the “Reed Gold Mine.” I had ventured into that gold mine and it’s from that recollection that I gathered my idea for the fictionalized story.
If you could set up your perfect writing scenario, what would it involve?
No preferred scenario for my writing as long as I’m in front of my keyboard and the power is on.
Were you an avid reader growing up?
I most definitely was NOT an avid reader as a youngster. My favorite was “Big Little Books” (1936-1940’s; picture on one page, writing on the opposite)—long gone from this earth by now. I do now read voraciously from my Kindle.
