Synopsis from Goodreads:
From award-winning author, Joyce Major comes this utterly gripping tale about a wildlife rescue gang embarking on a quest to rescue a stolen baby orangutan.
When eleven-year-old Jaylynn moves from Seattle to Sumatra, Indonesia, she discovers a baby orangutan chained to a wall by his mean owner, Maniac Man. Quickly she pieces together her mission: steal the baby orangutan, then return him to the rainforest. Unable to rescue him on her own, she asks Bima and Zaqi, two Sumatran friends, to join her rescue gang. But can they outfox Maniac Man? How will they find his mother and get him to the rainforest? Facing insurmountable obstacles, the gang struggles for solutions. When their friendship is strained at the seams, will they find the understanding needed to work together and the courage to stand up for what they believe in? Will Little O return to the rainforest?
A helpful appendix contains action steps for readers, information about palm oil and conservation lesson plans for teachers.
The Orangutan Rescue Gang is a wildlife saga based on facts concerning endangered orangutans, the illegal pet trade and palm oil issues. All profits will be donated to international orangutan conservation groups.

My review: The Orangutan Rescue Gang
The Orangutan Rescue Gang by Joyce Major is a gripping, informative, must-read book for teens and adults.
Jaylynn and her gang made me aware of the life and death situation the orangutan population is facing. I understand how frustrated they were with the adults and big business who value palm oil production over the importance of the rainforest and animal life.
Little O definitely melts your heart. He’s a scene-stealer extraordinaire.
I believe ages teen and up are able to discern right from wrong in some of Jaylynn’s actions. While I didn’t always approve, I understood her reasoning and motivation. It also created the appropriate level of conflict between her, Zaqi, and Bami.
There is a useful list of resources at the end of the book explaining ways children and adults can help with this situation.
Education is key.

About the Author:
Joyce Major lives in Seattle and loves to row crew, practice yoga and treasures her time with her grandkids. The author of the award-winning book “Smiling at the World,” Joyce has traveled all over the world as a volunteer. She volunteered for 6 months in Indonesia with the Sumatran Orangutan Society fighting against the illegal pet trade and working to save the endangered orangutans. This book was born in that jungle.
A quick interview with Joyce Major:
How long have you been writing?
I have been writing for about 10 years.
What inspired you to write in this genre?
As a former middle-grade teacher, I’ve always loved this age group and felt they would feel a kinship with the kids in the gang. After volunteering in Indonesia for 6 months to save orangutans, I felt I could create a story based on the current conservation situation. All profits will go to conservation groups.
Do you have a set writing schedule?
As for writing, morning is best with a cup of coffee and a short goal.
How do you know your work will resonate with readers?
I depend on beta readers to review my work and see if it’s a page-turner.
