Excerpt from Rise of Dresca

“I’m not much of a teacher,” said Sevora. She unclipped her scabbard and pulled the long blade free.

“I’ll bet,” said Datha with a snicker, just loud enough to regret it when Sevora sent him her most withering look.

“I’ll do my best to keep up,” said Vald. As he pulled Seth’s korossa from its worn scabbard, the blade seemed to ring. Sevora could have sworn she saw a faint blue light glimmer along its edge. She’d have shrugged it off if not for Seth’s wide eyes, which quickly turned serious.

Vald handed the scabbard to Seth, then twisted the sword in a narrow flourish, gripping hard on the hilt and shifting down into a stance Sevora recognized. Vald wasn’t showing off. She was about to be challenged.

She drew herself up. “Read… ahem… ready?”

Vald nodded.

Sevora shot forward, left arm straightened and her sword piercing the air where Vald’s bulk had been. He’d stepped left, pivoting and catching her blade with a stiff but powerful undercut. The force pulled her arm up and around so she stumbled two steps over.

She’d left her side open and knew what was coming. Vald closed in with a sweeping diagonal slash that her hasty defense barely caught. He pressed his korossa on hers and it took all her strength to keep her own blade from digging into her shoulder. Their eyes locked.

For the first time since the dragon swarms flew east, she was afraid.

My thoughts on Rise of Dresca

Rise of Dresca SQ with ID

Prepare to be entangled in a web of ancient malevolence and burgeoning power as you step into the gripping world of “Rise of Dresca” by Tim McKay. With a dash of chilling intrigue and a formidable backdrop of shadowy forces, this Young Adult Dark Fantasy unveils a remarkable tale that will surely captivate fans of the monster fantasy genre.

The opening lines resonate with an eerie promise, plunging readers into a realm where the darkness of ages awakens anew. As Ceremai crumbles, the stage is set for an enthralling journey alongside an assortment of unusual allies. This unlikely band finds themselves inexorably drawn by the threads of destiny toward a source of evil that threatens to reshape their world.

In this intricate narrative tapestry, characters take center stage, each with their own compelling arcs. A lord’s daughter transitions into an assassin, an orphan girl stumbles upon her latent power, and a captain’s schemes unfold in the shadows. The last remaining soldier of Ceremai also embarks on a fate-bound journey. These multi-dimensional characters contribute to the novel’s depth, forging deep connections with readers.

“Rise of Dresca” paints the dawn of a new era with a brush of unease, prompting us to question the nature of evil itself. The notion that what was intended to cause harm can evolve into something even more formidable is an enticing theme that adds complexity to the story. The underlying tension propels the narrative, leaving readers yearning to uncover the truth beneath the layers of darkness.

As the inaugural installment of the Draemeir Chronicle series, “Rise of Dresca” introduces readers to a meticulously crafted world that stands as a testament to Tim McKay’s skillful world-building. The realm of Naevoroth is a testament to his ability to blend imaginative creativity with tangible authenticity. The concept of evil weaving its tendrils through both the vulnerable and the haughty serves as a captivating backdrop to the characters’ trials and tribulations.

The novel’s dark and disturbing elements are masterfully intertwined with the relatable struggles of the characters, leading to a cohesive and immersive experience. With each page turned readers will find themselves inexorably drawn into a world where the boundaries between light and shadow blur, and the price of power is weighed against the strength of one’s resolve.

In “Rise of Dresca,” Tim McKay unfurls a tantalizing narrative that is equally a tale of personal growth and a confrontation with the abyss. If you are searching for a fantasy novel that embraces both the thrill of action and the exploration of the human psyche, this book promises an unforgettable journey into a world where power, destiny, and the insidious nature of evil intertwine seamlessly.
