My thoughts on Santa’s Magical Reindeer
Santa’s Magical Reindeer: Becoming Pen Pals by Michele Monaco is a delightful children’s picture book that deserves nothing less than a glowing 5-star review. This heartwarming tale unfolds in 38 pages of festive magic, captivating both young readers and their families.
The story kicks off right after Thanksgiving, ushering in the busiest time of the year for Santa and his Famous Eight reindeer. Monaco’s imaginative narrative takes readers on a quest with Prancer, Vixen, and Dasher, who set out in search of kids who believe in the enchantment of Christmas. A charming adventure ensues where the reindeer find three spirited girls and forge lifelong friendships through letter exchanges.
One of the standout features of this book is its lovable and considerate characters. Monaco has crafted a cast that resonates with warmth and charm, making it easy for young readers to connect with the magic of the holiday season.
The illustrations by Prabir Sarkar are nothing short of magical. Each page comes to life with vibrant colors and detailed artwork, creating a visually appealing experience for children. The readable text on the letters exchanged between the reindeer and the children adds a personal touch, enhancing the overall engagement of the story.
Beyond the enchanting narrative, Monaco cleverly incorporates the art of letter writing as a key theme. The book encourages children to view letter writing as a fun activity, promoting the development of writing abilities and stretching their imagination skills. The interactive page featuring questions for readers to ask the reindeer adds an extra layer of engagement, fostering a sense of participation and connection with the characters.
Moreover, Santa’s Magical Reindeer goes beyond just spreading holiday cheer. A commendable aspect is the author’s commitment to social responsibility. A portion of the book’s proceeds being donated to Kids in Crisis (kidsincrisis.org) adds a heartwarming layer to the overall experience, teaching young readers about the joy of giving back.
In Conclusion
Michele Monaco’s Santa’s Magical Reindeer: Becoming Pen Pals is a must-read for families seeking a heartwarming holiday tale. With lovable characters, beautiful illustrations, and a meaningful message, this children’s book earns a well-deserved five stars. It entertains and instills values of friendship, imagination, and the spirit of giving – making it a timeless addition to any child’s bookshelf.

Christmas is one of my favorite holidays because there’s a certain magic that’s in the air around the holidays. The smells in the air, the colors, the music, and the time with people you love! I find that people reach out to friends and family, they’re generous with their time and it’s a time that people start thinking about others. I love the baking and the preparation that goes into the holiday and the magic, mystery, and creative wonder that kids bring.
The spirit of Christmas thrives with hope, generosity, laughter, and reflection. It’s also a time of enjoying simple pleasures. I have three beautiful daughters, Corryn, Kylie and McKenna who were the inspiration for this book. This is the living and breathing story of their Christmas-filled childhood.
We lived in an area that had woods behind it and deer would be a common sighting on our lawn. I got the idea of these deer coming and watching my kids and reporting back to Santa. Before I knew it, I was playing the role of these reindeer and writing letters to my kids. My kids loved it and they were immersed in the idea and they were waiting in anticipation for their next letter so I encouraged them even before they could write to draw letters to their reindeer.
In a flash of an eye, my kids were writing letters back and forth to their reindeer and built such a beautiful relationship with them that I kept the tradition alive ever since then. I also started being a reindeer Pen Pal for my niece and nephew in Minnesota.
We do have other special Christmas traditions, one that has inspired the next book! We start off Christmas Eve morning with a large cup of hot chocolate and we pile into the car with snuggly blankets and we drive through Valley Forge Park where there are a lot of deer in the open lands and people walking on the open trails. My girls and I play Christmas music and we wish the reindeer good luck as they prepare for Christmas and we shout out the windows Merry Christmas to everyone that we see.
Because I think kids should be filled with wonder, creativity, and inspiration, I donate a portion of the proceeds to Kids in Crisis. This is a fantastic organization that is available 24 hours a day for kids facing any form of crisis, from abuse to homelessness, they provide physical, mental, environmental, and mental services to all kids in need. It is an organization that is making a great impact on children’s lives every day.
