My thoughts on Soso and The Kako Leaf
Soso and The Kako Leaf, written by Bella Disu, takes readers on a delightful adventure, following the life of a young girl named Soso. This captivating tale introduces us to a world of mysteries and ancient traditions predating Soso’s existence while exploring themes of confidence, self-esteem, and cultural identity.
One notable aspect of this book is its size, reminiscent of a coffee-table book that one would proudly display. The oversized format adds an element of grandeur and allure to the reading experience, immediately drawing the reader’s attention.
The illustrations by Aweli Emili are undoubtedly one of the book’s highlights. They are incredibly well-executed, featuring vibrant colors and intricate details. Many of the illustrations span full pages, enhancing the story’s visual impact and making it particularly suitable as a picture book. Emili’s artistic talent brings the narrative to life, allowing readers to immerse themselves fully in Soso’s enchanting world.
At its core, Soso and The Kako Leaf carries a powerful message of self-acceptance. As Soso navigates her journey, she learns to embrace and take pride in her birthmark—a lesson that resonates strongly with young readers who may face challenges in accepting their own unique qualities. Witnessing Soso overcome her insecurities is truly heartwarming, and the book succeeds in imparting an empowering sense of self-belief.
The author’s thoughtful approach extends to the inclusion of bolded words, especially those related to emotions. This deliberate choice provides an opportunity for young readers to expand their vocabulary and emotional literacy. The glossary at the end of the book serves as a helpful tool for further exploration, encouraging children to deepen their understanding of the words they encounter throughout the story.
Overall, Soso and The Kako Leaf is a beautifully imaginative tale of self-esteem and confidence. It effortlessly introduces young readers to a unique culture that they may be unfamiliar with, fostering a sense of curiosity and appreciation for diversity. Bella Disu’s engaging narrative and Aweli Emili’s exceptional illustrations make this book a captivating read that entertains and educates. It is a valuable addition to any child’s library, igniting their imagination and instilling valuable lessons along the way.
I received a copy of the book for the tour. This review is my honest, unbiased opinion.

Guest Post from the author of Soso and The Kako Leaf
Balancing my career and passion for writing: As a full-time business executive and a mother of two.
As a woman with many roles and responsibilities, I’ve long learned to embrace the art of multitasking. From baking delicious treats to overseeing executive duties, my life is a constant whirlwind of activities, even more so now that I’m an author. Yet, writing has always been a passion of mine—a way to express myself authentically, freely, and passionately. It’s a creative outlet that allows me to share stories that inspire and connect with others.
However, my busy schedule made finding writing time a challenge for a while. Thankfully, I developed an interesting quirk that keeps my creativity flowing and my words pouring onto the page. My writing quirk revolves around not limiting my creativity. When an idea strikes me, I seize the moment and write it down immediately. It could be a sudden burst of inspiration, a captivating sentence, or a thought-provoking concept.
I believe that creativity is fleeting, and if we don’t capture it in the moment, it may slip away forever. So, I’ve trained myself to be prepared, always carrying a notebook or having a writing app handy on my phone. This way, I can capture those precious moments of inspiration and let the ideas flow.
Another aspect of my writing quirk is separating ideation from editing. That’s because it’s harder to make time for writing if you feel pressured to make it perfect immediately. So now, amid a creative burst, I let my thoughts pour onto the page without worrying about refining them in the moment. It’s a process of uninhibited creation where I allow my ideas to flow freely without judgment or self-censorship. During this raw and unfiltered stage, the essence of my stories takes shape.
After the initial burst of creativity, I take time to streamline my ideas and refine them into a coherent narrative. This is where the editing process comes into play. I review my work, fine-tuning sentences, shaping characters, and polishing the overall structure. It’s a meticulous process that requires patience and attention to detail. By separating ideation from editing, I can fully immerse myself in each stage and bring out the best in my writing.
Ultimately, my writing quirk is all about embracing the unpredictable nature of creativity. It’s about seizing the moment, capturing ideas as they come, and allowing stories to unfold organically. This approach not only keeps my storytelling process exciting and dynamic but also allows me to tap into the depths of my imagination.
With every story I write, I hope to inspire and connect with readers, sharing tales that resonate with their hearts and minds. Writing is my passion, my escape, and my way of making a difference in the world, one word at a time.
