Reimagining family dinner starts with a book
By Sari Karplus
Nearly every article I’ve read about having a healthy family talks about the importance of family dinner together. But… are there any parents out there who have a wiggly kid who struggles to stay at the dinner table? You can’t see, but I’m also raising my hand.
For years we tried so many things, but with three young kids, two of whom seemed to be interested in anything but staying at the table and eating, we needed a solution. I feel like we tried everything from putting up the baby gate to a points system. Even a booster seat with a buckle was powerless against these active kiddos. But wouldn’t you know it, the solution came from our oldest son, who was in second grade at the time. He invented the game which inspired the book Squirrels in Antarctica.
It would be easy to dismiss the efforts of a child and think, “Pfft, it’s just a word game. Big deal.” There are a number of reasons that make this game so magically helpful and poignant, though. First of all, there’s no need to get out of your seat to play. We’d been suckered into playing “Telephone” with the kids, and inevitably they’re too small to whisper to the next person without leaving their seats. Second magical fact, there’s no winner or loser in this game! As a former sore loser with one descendant who shares this quality, this is pretty key.
When someone in your household is fiercely competitive, all games end with someone upset. Not the case with Squirrels in Antarctica! Thirdly, the goal is to entertain! So it creates fun, not discord, and inspires creativity. And since it’s an unstructured game, if someone has a mouthful of food, you can always come back to them.
At the time I didn’t know I’d be turning this concept into a book, but the thoughts of funny combos were flooding my brain. And before you know it, I had a fully rhyming manuscript that was cracking me up as well as everyone I would pitch it to.
Check out Squirrels in Antarctica for the game, stay for the fun jokes and illustrations. Your family dinner may just get a little more fun.
