Guest Post from Tina Brandau, author of Standing Strong
What I didn’t know about writing when I wrote my #1 best-selling book …
Pretty much everything! I had written in college and wrote a lot in the corporate realm. Both of those styles of writing are much more transactional or tactical without much emotion. Learning to write the depths of emotion was quite eye-opening and unnatural at first. When you are used to writing in one style for decades, it is not an immediate shift. The story I was undertaking was writing a personal and very vulnerable story of an unimageable accident.
The writing phase was fine, or so I thought. It was the editing that caused me much consternation. It was “go deeper”, “go deeper”, “go deeper”. Finally, I sat at my computer and asked out loud, “why are you writing this”? The answer was sudden and sharp, “to help one person. You got a do-over in life. This to inspire others and help them learn through your experience, your lessons, so they have a roadmap to chase their dreams”.
Once that happened, I wrote like I was talking to my dearest friend sharing vulnerably without worry. No more beating my head on a wall. No more feeling like that story would never be good enough. No more concern if by sharing I would be labeled for life and kill my career. No more wondering if it would ever help the one person I wanted to help.
The story is a witty and vulnerable look at my life. It was not easy to share that my accident caused a traumatic brain injury or how it limited my functioning to that of a young child but I did it by writing to a dear friend with my focus being on that one person. And when you write to your friend, your wit shines through.
Writing the story itself was full of every emotion. I had to re-live everything that happened to get in on paper authentically. Some of it I had not recalled at all. Our brains are magnificent computers so I’ve come to learn over the fifteen years.
I’m often asked what was the hardest chapter to write? It was the beginning. How do you start a story about something true that is so unimaginable and make it believable? That was the biggest challenge. The easiest to write was the end. To be completely transparent, I had a hard time ending the book, there was so much more I wanted to share.
If you have ever doubted you can do something in life, anything really, the lessons in here will help you take the right steps in order to prove yourself wrong. I believe the biggest challenge in life is to become all that we have the possibility of becoming. Become unstoppable at becoming what’s possible.
