Excerpt from Subtle Felonies
Hannibal saw the five inches of stainless-steel arcing toward his stomach and managed to swing his right arm down fast enough to stop Cawfee’s arm, wrist against wrist. He gripped Cawfee’s knife hand with both of his own and twisted hard. It didn’t break Cawfee’s grip on the weapon, but he did release Hannibal’s jacket, waving his free arm to keep his balance.
Hannibal let go and jumped back away from Cawfee. Wrestling with a knife in the hand of a bigger man was a losing proposition. He back pedaled, trying to get more distance from that knife, but Cawfee kept charging at him.
“I seen your gun,” Cawfee said, “but I saw how you acted around the women and I figured you wouldn’t go around strapped here at the house. Not so stupid now, huh?”
At that moment, Hannibal felt stupid, thinking Cawfee might make the rational choice. Now he faced a man who looked like he knew what he was doing with a blade, making short feinting slashes at Hannibal. He would have to wait until Cawfee committed before he tried to disarm him.
Cawfee’s eyes lit up and he leaped forward faster than Hannibal thought he could. The blade swished past in front of him, but he lost his footing and fell. His back thudded into the turf and Cawfee dropped on top of him, switching his grip to stab down. Hannibal crossed his forearms, stopping Cawfee’s arm between his fists. Cawfee applied all his weight, forcing the knife down to within an inch of Hannibal’s throat. Both men panted hard with the opposing effort, Hannibal gearing up to push hard to one side.
Then there was a short whoosh and a loud crack sound. The impact sounded to him just like a man driving a ball down the fairway.

My Thoughts on Subtle Felonies
“Subtle Felonies” by Austin S. Camacho is a gripping addition to the Hannibal Jones Mystery Series. The book kicks off with the disappearance of Xander Brown, a retired basketball star, and the subsequent involvement of Hannibal Jones, the self-proclaimed troubleshooter and private eye. Camacho skillfully weaves a complex web of intrigue revolving around the world of rich former athletes and their eccentric companions, including a flashy entrepreneur and a soul singer with underworld connections. The central question of whether Xander has willingly vanished or fallen victim to a nefarious plot keeps readers hooked from the very beginning.
Camacho’s novel excels in several areas. The top-notch character development allows readers to connect with the diverse cast. The pacing is relentless, drawing readers in and making it nearly impossible to put the book down, always urging you to read “just one more” chapter. The storyline is well-crafted, full of depth and complexity, and offers plenty of excitement and unexpected plot twists that will keep mystery and thriller enthusiasts thoroughly engaged.
“Subtle Felonies” is a must-read for fans of the genre, as it combines a compelling mystery with excellent character development and a plot that continually surprises. Austin S. Camacho delivers a thrilling experience, making this book a compelling addition to the Hannibal Jones Mystery Series.
I received a copy of the book for the tour. This review is my honest, unbiased opinion.

Guest Post from Austin Camacho, author of Subtle Felonies
Five Reasons You Should Read My Book
The first reason you should read Subtle Felonies is to meet a true hero. Hannibal Jones is a private eye in the classic hardboiled mold. He has a clearly defined morality all his own, he’s tough when he needs to be, but tender when that’s called for. He also has a smart mouth and is clever enough to solve a twisty mystery. He may seem familiar to fans of Lew Archer, Travis McGee and Phillip Marlowe but being a man of mixed race raised in Germany gives him a unique perspective when dealing with the book’s diverse cast. This is a man you will be happy to get to know.
Reason number two would be the settings. I do a lot of driving around in the process of writing my novels. I need to get the feel for every corner of the DMV (District of Columbia/ Maryland / Virginia) to give you the sights, the tastes, the smells, the sounds, the FEEL of our area. You will be pulled in and immersed in the world my characters live in.
The pace of my story is another good reason to read this one. Once Hannibal sinks his teeth into the mystery, events move at a breakneck pace. The feeling of urgency to find the missing man never slackens. Almost every chapter ends with a cliffhanger. My objective is to leave no place in the whole book where it will be easy to put it down for the night.
The biggest reason to read Subtle Felonies is the mystery itself. I’ve constructed a plot that twists like a corkscrew with clues scattered about the landscape. There ARE enough clues in plain sight for you to solve this mystery and figure out who the ultimate villain is… but you won’t. and in the meantime, a series of bad men and women appear with their own schemes that only confuse the sleuth trying to sort out the big villain’s plot.
That is the biggest reason, but I can give you one more good motive for reading Subtle Felonies. It is only the latest in a series of complex mysteries Hannibal Jones has faced. Each of his previous seven adventures is populated by its own cast of fascinating characters, explores parts of the Washington area, moves at its own frenetic pace, and offers opportunities to get to know this knight errant in dark glasses, DC’s professional troubleshooter, Hannibal Jones. So when you finish Subtle Felonies you’ll know there’s more great reading ahead.

Thanks, Nancy. Hannibal Jones is a real hero in the traditional sense. He’s not perfect by any means, but his mission is always to help others.
