In this humorously touching novel by the critically acclaimed author of Degrees of Love, a woman is blindsided when her high school sweetheart abandons her after eighteen years of marriage.
At sixteen, Kimberly Kirby thought the only thing she needed to be perfectly happy was to spend the rest of her life with Jay Braxton. Twenty years later, she still believes it. As they proudly watch their daughter, Haley, graduate from high school, she imagines her life is as perfect as anyone could reasonably expect. Jay is a formidable attorney, she a freelance writer, and their love as strong as ever. With Haley heading to UC Berkeley in the fall, Kimberly fantasizes about making love on the kitchen table. She has no clue that Jay's bags are already packed.
Now divorced and determined to squelch her love for Jay, she accepts a gig writing a sex and dating blog for divorcees. As the Virgin Dater, she is on the hunt for love. No-strings-attached nights with a sexy fireman and moving to San Francisco are just what she needs to boost her battered ego and mend her shattered heart.
But just as she falls hard for a talented young chef, Jay fights to win her back. Torn between her bold new life and the comfort of Jay's strong arms, she questions if there is too much to forgive.
The ten thousand I love yous that had passed Jay's lips can't be dismissed, but nor can her newfound freedom and the knowledge that her happiness doesn't depend on Jay.

Never Too Late to Be a Writer by Lisa Slabach
Two questions that I am frequently asked are: have I always wanted to be a writer and when did I start writing. I used to cringe a bit because I considered myself a late bloomer when it came to writing. I’m not one of those people who wrote her first story at the age of twelve and then went on to get an undergraduate degree in English and an M.F.A. in Creative Writing. I studied acting and had dreams of being the Sarah Bernhardt of my era.
I gave up theater life when my husband and I started a family. I have no regrets and no delusions that I gave up stardom for motherhood. The theater was fun and I loved being part of a production, but I wanted my face to be the last my children saw before they went to sleep at night … so I quit.
I went to work for a Fortune 500 company, joined the ranks of corporate America, and found other creative outlets like cooking, making crazy-elaborate Halloween costumes, and planning weekend craft projects with my girls. It was immensely fulfilling until they grew older, and our joint projects gave way to other interests. That was when I started to feel like I had to do something creative or bust.
As luck would have it, I was traveling a lot for work, which meant I had free time in airports and hotels to think. My writing bug started one night when I was staying at a Marriott and noticed a man and woman who appeared to be having a business dinner. The next morning, I saw them exiting a room together. It may have been perfectly innocent, but they sparked an idea for a scene that I couldn’t get out of my head. I wrote it down later that night.
After writing the first scene, I became obsessed with the characters and kept going. Around thirty pages in, I admitted to myself that I was writing a novel. About six months later, I finished the first draft of my first novel, Degrees of Love. I was in my forties and up until that point had never even considered being an author. I found that I loved writing and it seemed to come naturally to me. This is not to say that I didn’t have to work at being a good writer. I’ve studied the craft and continually strive to be better.
Lesson learned: if you think you are too old to start wordsmithing, you’re not. I’ve since met many authors who wrote their first novels after retirement. With the magic of laptops and writing software, it’s never been easier to polish a story and ready a manuscript for publication. The proliferation of publishing options has opened the floodgates and made it possible for anyone who has a story to tell to be an author.
