However, when Charlotte discovers that an interloper has infiltrated their property, she must decide between keeping the potential threat a secret or embracing the potential for companionship that the intrusion represents.

As the chaotic world that lurks outside the fence surrounding her farm disrupts Charlotte’s life even further, she must reach deep within herself and find the courage to become the mature young woman she claims to be—or risk losing everything that she and her family have worked so hard to build.

My thoughts on The After

The After is the first book in J. Taylor’s After Series. It’s a middle-grade dystopian story that grabs your attention from the first page. At 183 pages, it’s the perfect length for young readers but with enough depth to keep older ones intrigued, too.

The story centers around Charlotte, a resilient 14-year-old who feels incredibly real and relatable. Whether you’re her age or much older, her journey of facing challenges head-on is something everyone can connect with. Charlotte’s growth and determination make her an inspiring character, and her experiences bring out important themes like courage and perseverance.

Taylor’s world-building is top-notch. The dystopian setting is vivid and believable, immersing the reader in a society that feels both imaginative and eerily possible. The details of the world and its struggles are so well done that the reader can almost see and feel everything as they read.

What really sets “The After” apart is how Taylor tells such a gripping story without ever resorting to cheap thrills or inappropriate content. There’s no need for shock value or foul language here. The plot is strong enough to keep you on the edge of your seat. This makes it an excellent choice for younger readers while still being thought-provoking and engaging for adults.

“The After” is a fantastic start to what promises to be an exciting series. Taylor’s skillful storytelling, memorable characters, and richly developed world make it a must-read for anyone who enjoys dystopian fiction. Plus, the absence of gratuitous content makes it accessible and enjoyable for middle-grade readers yet still layered enough for an older audience. It’s an excellent example of how powerful and thoughtful fiction can be.

I received a copy of the book for the tour. This review is my honest, unbiased opinion.

About J. Taylor

Author J. Taylor image Joanne Taylor The After - Middle Grade Dystopian - Blog Graphic

J. Taylor is a mother of five and a classroom teacher who revels in the magic of storytelling. Like the protagonist of her novel, she grew up in Nova Scotia. However, she has since lived in Resolute Bay and Hall Beach, Nunavut, as well as Kelowna, BC, before settling in Calgary, AB. Her love of writing was inspired by her love of reading, which she has made a priority in her home and in her classroom. When she’s not reading, writing, or teaching, J. Taylor enjoys sports of all kinds, visiting her grown children, and getting out into nature.

What was your favorite part and least favorite part of the publishing journey?

Hands down, my favourite part was writing the novel! As the story progressed, I
became excited about what was happening in the characters’ lives and the choices
the characters were making. Some days, I would begin writing a scene, then the
idea I had just didn’t fit and something completely different—something I hadn’t
thought of before that moment in time—would be created. I found that to be
exhilarating and inspiring.

Second, the children in a classroom becoming excited about my novel—desperately
wanting to know what happens next!

Putting my work out there for the world to see is probably my least favourite part of
publishing. I mean, I want to share the story I’ve written, but in reality, I’ve found it
to be a humbling and somewhat overwhelming experience. I’m actually a bit of an
introvert (although so competitive and loud at parties some may say
otherwise—haha).

Putting myself and my work under a microscope for the world to
dissect makes me feel quite exposed. Perhaps, as Book Two of the After Series
(Survival) and then Book Three (The Invasion) become published (2025), I will relax
more into the role of being an author.
