The Bones of Amoret: A Novel by Arthur Herbert
Published by Stitched Smile Publishing on 02/13/2022
Genres: Fiction, Medical, Mystery, Thriller
Format: Audiobook, eBook, Paperback
Pages: 329
In this enigmatic follow-up to his critically acclaimed debut novel The Cuts that Cure, Arthur Herbert returns to the Texas-Mexico border with this saga of a small town’s bloody loss of innocence.
Amoret, Texas, 1982. Life along the border is harsh, but in a world where cultures work together to carve a living from the desert landscape, Blaine Beckett lives a life of isolation. A transplanted Boston intellectual, for twenty years locals have viewed him as a snob, a misanthrope, an outsider. He seems content to stand apart until one night when he vanishes into thin air amid signs of foul play.
Noah Grady, the town doctor, is a charming and popular good ol’ boy. He’s also a keeper of secrets, both the town’s and his own. He watches from afar as the mystery of Blaine’s disappearance unravels and rumors fly. Were the incipient cartels responsible? Was it a local with a grudge? Or did Blaine himself orchestrate his own disappearance? Then the unthinkable happens, and Noah begins to realize he’s considered a suspect.
Paced like a lit fuse and full of dizzying plot twists, The Bones of Amoret is a riveting whodunit that will keep you guessing all the way to its shocking conclusion.

Guest Post from the Author of The Bones of Amoret
Greetings, and thank you for allowing me the privilege of a guest post on your blog!
This book was a different sort of exercise for me than my debut novel, The Cuts that Cure. I’ve spoken and written many times about the fact that with Cuts I didn’t sit down one day and say, “Today I will begin writing a novel.” It’s not an embellishment to say that book just sort of happened, as a nonsensical Word document full of descriptive prose morphed organically into a story, like the apocryphal sculptor removing everything from the block of marble that didn’t look like an elephant.
But as that book evolved, it did so by becoming a blank screen onto which I projected a horrible conflagration of emotions with which I was dealing at the time. I was having constant revenge fantasies, daydreaming about feeding this person from work feet-first into a wood chipper until – you know what? I’m going to stop myself there. Suffice it to say, Cuts was purgative, an outlet borne of a need to process a professional conflict I was experiencing at the time.
The Bones of Amoret could not be more different in tone. Inevitably, that’s due in part to the fact that my head was in such a better place during the crafting of this book. Beginning with the day I came home from my job to my wife and said, “I don’t think I can work there anymore,”
I slowly started to release the anger that was chewing me up inside while at the same time fueling Cuts. What was left behind (gratifyingly) were positive emotions.
I never forget how great my wife is (I really out-kicked my coverage when I married her), but she showed me once again how lucky I am to have her when she supported the decision to uproot ourselves so that I could take a better job. I circled back again and again to the love we feel for each other, our sense of being in it together, of us against the world, and with that the seeds of The Bones of Amoret were planted.
I chose the name Amoret, in fact, as a tribute to the character Amoret who symbolizes married love in Spenser’s The Faerie Queene, and at its core it’s this love that drives the novel. With that as a premise, I began to bring in the “what-ifs” that fuel the conflict, and by that point I was having fun again.
That’s one of the things that I like most about this book. If you’re just in the mood for a suspenseful, fast-paced whodunnit, it more than succeeds on that level alone. But if you’re looking for more, with themes of redemption and reflections on what it means to be a captive to love, I like to think the novel works on that level too.
I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed creating it. And finally, I’d like to thank you for giving me some of your most precious resource: your time. Without an audience, I’d just be talking to myself. Thank you for letting me take you by the hand so that together we could tour the space between my ears. Until next time, stay safe.
