My thoughts on The Box
Jo Linsdell’s “The Box” beautifully celebrates imagination and creativity. The story shows how something as ordinary as a cardboard box can become a boundless adventure through simple yet engaging prose and delightful illustrations.
I love the superimposed line drawings that show what the box is being used for in the boy’s imagination. While you are reading this with your little ones, I bet they come up with many more imaginative uses.
The repeated phrase, “Because a box is just a box, except when it’s not,” adds a playful rhythm that young children will love. Rhymes and repetition are great tools for emerging readers, and this book nails it.
Children and adults will find joy in this story. While children will delight in the imaginative possibilities, parents will appreciate the subtle nudge to reuse and recycle. It’s a gentle reminder that high-tech toys aren’t required for meaningful fun—imagination is what truly counts.
The author’s experiences with her children shine through, giving the story an authentic, heartfelt feel. It’s the perfect choice for family storytime, encouraging creativity while promoting sustainability. Plus, its “less is more” message feels refreshing and empowering.
I read this gem through Kindle Unlimited, and even though I know Jo from the online writing world, my review is totally honest. If you’re not following her on social media, you’re missing out on a treasure trove of inspiration!

About Jo Linsdell
Jo Linsdell was born in Gillingham, Kent (UK) in September 1980. Having passed 10 GCSE's, she went on to study Business Studies, History and Art A-Levels at Yateley 6th Form. She left England and moved to Rome, Italy in June 2001, where she now lives with her Italian husband and their two young sons.
