My Thoughts on The Boy Who Cried Wolf

The Boy Who Cried Wolfe (and Other Great Stories with Lessons) is a collection of thirteen beloved fables, retold in modern, engaging language that feels fresh while staying true to their timeless messages. From classics like The Tortoise and the Hare and The Goose and the Golden Eggs to gems such as Belling the Cat, each story ends with a moral that is easy for children to grasp.

These retellings embrace the authentic spirit of Aesop’s Fables. That means the endings aren’t always tied up neatly with a happy bow—but that’s part of their power. Kids learn that actions have consequences, and sometimes the lesson is more valuable than a “happily ever after.”

What sets this collection apart is its artwork. The illustrations are bright, realistic, and full of personality. They breathe new life into familiar tales, making them irresistible to young readers. I especially loved how each animal or character carried such expressive detail—enough to spark imagination and even a few giggles.

Beyond the beauty, the book is deeply practical. Parents, teachers, and caregivers can use it to spark conversations about honesty, patience, responsibility, and kindness. The stories are short enough for bedtime but meaningful enough for classroom discussions.

Overall, this is a book that entertains while teaching. It’s fun, funny, and thoughtful—a great choice for children ages 3–7, though even older kids will enjoy the storytelling and art.

🖋️ Guest Post from Dr. Uzma Farooq

As part of this tour, Dr. Farooq has shared a beautiful reflection on balancing family, medicine, and creativity—along with how this special book came to life with her sons.

Balancing life as a mother of three beautiful sons, a dedicated dermatopathologist, and a first-time author has been one of the most humbling and beautiful experiences of my life. Each role demands a different part of me: bottomless love for my kids, diagnosing strange and everyday skin lesions, and nurturing the artist/author inside of me —and somehow, in the whirlwind of everyday chaos, they all find a way to coexist.

Motherhood is uplifting and humbling simultaneously. My eldest son just left for college. My second son is autistic and needs assistance and redirecting and we have managed to beautifully run a special needs house. My youngest son has just entered his teens. One of the ways I wanted to bring us together as a family was by co-authoring a timeless children’s book.

I had the idea floating for many years and began the book over 10 years ago, but it is with my sons that I finalized the project, including all aspects of the prose, decisions on illustrations, font, layout, all of it. Together we brainstormed, laughed, argued, and eventually compiled a retelling of 13 of Aesop’s classic fables with timeless lessons at the bottom of each story. These stories are mostly familiar to most of us, with resounding lessons like “slow and steady wins the race.”

Prior collections of these fables are available, but there are over 200 stories with basic sketches; we decided to pick 13 of our favorites and add spectacular and memorable illustrations to pair with the witty stories. We feel that we have created a staple children’s book that even the adults will enjoy.

🌟Meet the Authors

“Photo of Dr. Uzma Farooq with her two sons and co-authors, Samir Ahmad and Amani Ahmad, smiling together in front of a bookshelf and leafy wall mural.”

Uzma Farooq, MD, is a triple board-certified dermatopathologist and artist. She practices medicine in Miami, Florida. She loves to read, and one of her favorite books growing up was an illustrated copy of Aesop’s fables. Samir Ahmad and Amani Ahmad, her sons, helped her write this book with humor and enthusiasm as they learned the lessons themselves along the way.
