Excerpt from The Dithereens
Magela opened her eyes. The sun was peeking over the eastern horizon. Magela jolted. She had fallen asleep!
Oh no!
Magela scuttled to the front of the ship, her claws tapping the wooden deck with each step. She looked over the ship’s railing and saw nothing but ocean.
Magela scuttled down the deck towards the back of the ship. She examined the ocean to the rear of the ship and then scurried up the other side of the ship.
Nothing but ocean, sky, sun and clouds.
There was not a single Bognick in sight!
‘Not good enough!’ Magela admonished herself. Magela slumped onto the deck, her claws hanging dejectedly. She stared into the vast sky, feeling completely deflated. Where were the Bognicks now? Where was she?
A speck on the horizon caught Magela’s eye—a bird. The speck grew larger. Soon Magela could make out large dark wings, a dark head and a white underside. The large bird appeared to be flying straight towards the ship.
Magela recognised the bird as a type of booby bird. Booby birds are bulky seabirds that catch their fish by flying high above the sea to spot fish swimming below before plunge-diving deep beneath the surface to grab the unsuspecting fish in their strong bills.
As Magela watched the booby bird approaching, she soon realised this was an unusual type of booby bird. This booby bird was larger than other booby birds she had seen, much larger. This booby bird also had very odd feet, which could be seen from a great distance because of their bright colour. Magela had seen brown-footed boobies before. Magela had seen blue-footed boobies before. But Magela had never seen a green-footed booby before.
The booby bird landed on the ship’s railing near where Magela stood, causing the ship to tilt from the bird’s weight. The bird’s feet were the brightest green Magela had ever seen, even brighter than the glowing green chibip leaves that grew in the Furdonga.
‘G’day, bird,’ Magela said to the enormous green-footed booby.
‘G’day, ghost crab,’ replied the booby. ‘This is an interesting situation you find yourself in.’
Magela watched the very large bird warily. Even though booby birds ate fish, Magela thought they might also be fond of crabs.
‘How so bird?’ Magela asked.
The green-footed booby replied, ‘It’s just that I’ve seen those creatures lurking beneath your ship before. They often swim deep beneath the surface into the Doughnut Bioherms, to the northwest of here.’
‘What?!’ Magela cried. ‘Creatures lurking beneath my ship?’
Suddenly, loud scraping and splintering noises rose from below. Magela felt the timbre beneath her rattle. Then the ship tilted forward. Magela tensed her muscles and dug her claws down to keep from slipping along the tilted deck.
‘Like I said,’ the green-footed booby called as it took flight, ‘I’ve seen the creatures lurking beneath your ship at the Doughnut Bioherms to the northwest.’
The front of the ship sank deeper into the water, causing the rear of the ship to pitch upwards. Magela slid further along the smooth timbre deck towards the front of the ship. She finally stopped when she bounced into the front railing. Magela peered over the railing. The front of the ship was about to dip into the ocean. The ship would soon sink.
