A Critical Time for Kindness By Cheryl DaVeiga
As we navigate our ever-changing world, teaching children kindness has never been more crucial.
I know I’m not the only one who has noticed an entirely new vocabulary in our news and publications. Name-calling and bullying are becoming normalized in our adult society. Take these action verbs from recent headlines:
- One executive “slams” another.
- A country star “pummels” a politician.
- A celebrity “mocks” another celebrity, and “shades” another. People are “roasted, trolled, trashed, shut down, trounced…”
These are real words from real headlines–not uttered by schoolyard bullies–but by adults. We teach anti-bullying in schools, but a lack of kindness is all around us.
And it’s not just ‘nice’ to be kind. Research shows that:
- Kindness builds resilience in A kindness culture empowers kids to face adversity and bounce back with resilience and strength.
- Kindness is a crucial leadership True leaders embrace a culture of empathy, cooperation, and commitment to the well-being of others.
- Kindness and empathy foster connection across cultural, social, and geographical
- Kindness just makes us feel
We’d all benefit from some self-reflection on this topic.
For my small part, I attempt to embed kindness and empathy in every children’s book I write. Yes, I want you to laugh and have fun with the stories and the wordplay, but nurturing empathy shows up in each plot. In War at the Ice Cream Store, the flavors and toppings feel empathy when Mustachio Pistachio falls to the floor and begins to melt. As for the bully, learning how it feels to be bullied himself changes his perspective.
In Rocket Red: A Little Ant with a Big Dream, Rocket Red’s empathetic friends come to his aid when they learn he is in trouble.
In Chocolate Space Bunnies, the earthlings empathize with the plight of the homeless ‘Fonduliens.
In The Prickly Problem, Dr. Pete the Porcupine looks beyond the prickly exterior of Cactus Jack to see an underlying need for love.
And in The Dolphin Dentist: No Sharks Allowed, the dolphin dentist faces his fear of sharks because he knows in his heart kindness trumps fear.
Learning through stories is just one way we can cultivate kindness in our children. I probably won’t change the world with my books, but maybe I’m chipping away.
