🌟Welcome back, friends!

Today I’m reviewing The Gold in the Grey by Wes Verde as part of a Goddess Fish Promotions Review Tour. This historical thriller immediately grabbed me with its atmospheric setting, layered characters, and irresistible mix of danger, deception, and suspense.

Set during the Great Depression, the story follows seasoned con artist Roy Orville, who is determined to secure a better future for his estranged daughter. When a lucrative opportunity surfaces, Roy dives into Greystone Asylum — a place where secrets whisper through every hallway and the healers may be more dangerous than the patients. Once inside, he discovers the “job” is far more perilous than he ever imagined, and sanity becomes the highest-stakes gamble of all.

If you love thrillers with grit, psychological tension, and a touch of noir charm, this one delivers.

📜Excerpt from The Gold in the Grey

Here’s a look inside The Gold in the Grey! I chose this excerpt because it perfectly showcases the book’s sharp dialogue and tense undercurrents. This scene perfectly captures Verde’s blend of sharp dialogue, unsettling atmosphere, and oddly charismatic characters. It’s a great peek at Roy’s quick thinking — and the strange personalities he’s forced to navigate inside Greystone Asylum.

“So, Mr. Young, what is it exactly that’s bothering you?” Dr. Chulak began after they had made pleasantries. As usual, Roy thought it prudent to use a pseudonym.

Graham was a rotund and jolly individual. Once his red hair turned white, he’d make for a fine Santa Claus except for the beard. At this time, he only had a bushy mustache but that actually emphasized his full and rosy cheeks, reinforcing the Saint Nick image.

Graham went on, “Difficulty sleeping? Sleeping too much? Maybe a little bedroom trouble?”

Roy forced a smile. “None of the above, thank you.”

This seemed to confuse Graham who only shrugged. “Suit yourself.” He then proceeded to spoon a measured quantity of white powder into a glass, then poured half a bottle of Coca Cola into it, gently stirring it with the same spoon.

“Just isn’t the same since they changed the recipe,” Graham went on. “Have to mix it myself now.” He then downed a third of the glass in a single swallow, grunting with approval. “Now that’ll put some pep in yer step.” He smacked his lips contentedly. “You want to know something funny? I actually predicted this whole mess with the stock market.”

“Did you now?” Roy asked obligingly.

“Oh, you bet. You ever been on a trading floor? Madness. Pandemonium. All men shouting over each other, making trades, jostling and elbowing each other to try and get the best edge. Fortunes change hands based on a difference of seconds. You think men can operate at that level for long without pharmacological help? Not likely. So, when the government banned cocaine how could Wall Street not help but go tits up?”

“Quite,” Roy replied automatically. “As to the matter at hand-”

✨ My Thoughts on The Gold in the Grey ✨

The Gold in the Grey is a gritty, clever, and atmospheric dive into an era thick with desperation — and Wes Verde captures it beautifully. The Depression-era backdrop pulses through every scene, grounding Roy Orville’s schemes in a sense of real-world stakes and scarcity.

Roy is not the typical hero, and that’s exactly what makes him so compelling. His moral ambiguity, sharp wit, and deep need for redemption give the story emotional weight beyond the high-stakes con. You root for him even when you know he’s bending the rules — because survival itself feels like a con in this world.

But the true star of the novel is Greystone Asylum. Its oppressive walls, corrupt power structures, and chilling atmosphere add a near-horror edge to the narrative. Verde excels at crafting tension, revealing just enough danger to keep readers uneasy while still leaving room for the unexpected. Every chapter pulled me deeper into its shadows.

The supporting cast — crooked doctors, dangerous allies, and unpredictable threats — round out the story with colorful flair and mounting dread. The pacing is tight, the dialogue sharp, and the final act absolutely delivers.

An engaging and immersive historical thriller with teeth. “This thriller lured me in like a con I couldn’t refuse.”
