Source: iRead Book ToursClarissa Martinez, a biracial young woman has lived in seven different countries by the time she turns twenty. She thinks it’s time to settle in a place she could call home. But where?
She joins a quest for the provenance of stolen illuminated manuscripts, a medieval art form that languished with the fifteenth century invention of the printing press. For her, these ancient manuscripts elicit cherished memories of children’s picture books her mother read to her, nourishing a passion for art.
Though immersed in art, she’s naïve about life. She’s disheartened and disillusioned by the machinations the quest reveals of an esoteric, sometimes unscrupulous art world. What compels individuals to steal artworks, and conquerors to plunder them from the vanquished? Why do collectors buy artworks for hundreds of millions of dollars? Who decides the value of an art piece and how?
And she wonders—will this quest reward her with a sense of belonging, a sense of home?

My thoughts on The Golden Manuscripts
In the latest installment of the “Between Two Worlds” series, author Evy Journey takes readers on a captivating journey through history, art, and the intricacies of human identity in her novel, “The Golden Manuscripts.” Set against the backdrop of a quest for stolen illuminated manuscripts, this work seamlessly blends elements of literary, women’s fiction, crime, and mystery genres to craft a narrative that resonates with both heart and intellect.
The protagonist, Clarissa, an intriguing mix of Asian and Caucasian heritage, embarks on a compelling quest to find her sense of belonging by unearthing the provenance of stolen medieval illuminated manuscripts. Having traversed seven different countries, Clarissa seeks an anchor, a place she can finally call home. The city of her birth becomes the setting for her exploration, and her connection with these ancient manuscripts becomes a vessel for her yearning.
As Clarissa delves into the mystery surrounding the stolen manuscripts, readers are treated to a rich tapestry of memories and emotions. The author deftly weaves the importance of art in Clarissa’s life, linking it to cherished childhood memories and her passion for creativity. This connection adds a layer of depth to the narrative, portraying art not merely as a physical artifact but as a conduit for emotions and memories.
Evy Journey takes readers on a dual journey—one into the labyrinthine world of art theft and the other into Clarissa’s personal exploration of her identity. The trail of the manuscripts leads to an enigmatic American soldier who, intriguingly, held onto the stolen artwork for five decades.
The narrative strikes a balance between immersing readers in the world of art and provoking deeper thought. As Clarissa navigates the sometimes murky art world, readers are confronted with queries about human nature, greed, and the value we attribute to objects. Skillfully embedded in the narrative, these philosophical considerations elevate “The Golden Manuscripts” beyond a mere mystery novel.
While the mystery at the story’s core presents intriguing twists and turns, some clues require a temporary suspension of disbelief. Yet, the story’s strength lies in its ability to weave an engrossing narrative that transcends these minor hurdles. The characters that populate this tale are very relatable, their complexities and struggles mirroring universal human experiences.
“The Golden Manuscripts” is both a standalone novel and a part of a larger series, making it accessible to new readers and those familiar with the “Between Two Worlds” saga.
In Conclusion
“The Golden Manuscripts” by Evy Journey is a thought-provoking and engaging literary work that seamlessly melds genres to deliver a story that is as much about unearthing history as it is about discovering one’s identity. With its relatable characters, immersive narrative, and philosophical undertones, this novel will undoubtedly find resonance among art enthusiasts, mystery aficionados, and anyone intrigued by the intricate layers of human nature.
I received a copy of the book for the tour. This review is my honest, unbiased opinion.

Eating Your Way Through Different Cultures
Food is our common ground, a universal experience
James Beard
Who could dispute that food is a universal experience? But how much of a common ground is it?
Like everyone else, I have prejudices about food. The culture, including religion, in which we grow up shapes our tastes and preferences.
I once asked my husband (of Polish descent) what the strangest food was that he had ever eaten. He said sushi. But I love sushi, so he and I did not speak a common language there.
I also love oysters that he, at first, preferred to eat fried. But he tasted the freshest raw oysters on a trip we took to La Rochelle, north of the Brittany coast in France. La Rochelle claimed to have the best oysters in the world and his first bite of their oysters convinced him. After that experience, he gobbled up raw oysters.
Maybe, the right experience can change one’s preferences, maybe even her prejudices.
I have traveled throughout Mexico, Asia, Europe, and parts of North Africa, where I have eaten raw fish, shellfish, various kinds of fungi and seaweed, seven kinds of mole, a couple of red spicy grasshoppers, countless stinky cheeses, meat in blood sauce, and many flavors of French macarons. I’m not a big meat eater, but I have tasted and occasionally relished tongue, feet, tail, some pig innards, and even pig snout.
Isn’t it weird, then, that the strangest food, for me, is a vegetable from my childhood? Okra. Not that I dislike its taste or its smell. But I have trouble with its sliminess. This is an individual quirk, obviously, and not culture-based.
Being adventurous about food is one way you can cross cultures. Sampling cuisines from different countries can be a delicious, painless way of immersing yourself in an otherwise strange culture.
In all novels of my series, Between Two Worlds, I have included dining and eating scenes not only to help the story along. I also think food and eating are such primal, usually pleasurable, experiences that just reading about them is fun. And describing ethnic food and dishes helps situate stories with multicultural characters and scenarios, lending them realism and authenticity.
Besides, I love writing about them.
