Excerpt from The Hallowmas Train

When the servants returned to the kitchen with the requested goods, Dilly, who had spotted cabinets, chests, and wardrobes in another storage room, stayed behind. The timerider carried a lantern into the dark room and set it on a dusty bureau top. Rummaging through old documents, she lost track of time until the lamp began to flicker.

“Better go upstairs before all the lamps burn out,” she said aloud.

As if on cue, every lamp died out and Dilly found herself in total darkness. Moving forward cautiously, she bumped her foot against something which skittered away uttering little squeaks. Now she could hear other creatures rustling about. Fighting panic, she held her hands out to feel her way toward the stairs.

And then light returned. Dilly gasped and turned to find the source of the sudden illumination. A greenish glow illuminated the far end of the room. Puzzled, she stared at it, hoping that a servant might put in an appearance through another of the hotel’s doors. But there was no servant and there didn’t seem to be a door unless it was blocked by the large walnut wardrobe positioned against the glowing wall.

Dilly’s skin prickled with the awareness that she was not alone.

“You know I’m here,” said a low, gentle voice at her side.

“Vek?” she asked apprehensively.

“Come with me to my palace of dreams.”

The seductive vapours combined with the hypnotic voice were dizzying. Dilly feared that she would faint. She tried to yell for help but could barely whisper.

You’re trembling, my dear.”

“What do you want?”

“I want you.”

My thoughts on The Hallowmas Train

The Hallowmas Train is a captivating story. I kept trying to put it down so I could work on daily chores, but I found myself with it back in my hand while I devoured chapter after chapter.

This unique tale is imaginative and well-written. The characters are fully developed and the settings described so well you can picture them in full detail like a movie in your mind.

Fans of time-travel and mysterious stories will love this book. It’s twisty and entertaining with a full cast of characters residing in two worlds.
