✨ My Thoughts on The Illumination: Izol ✨
The Illumination: Izol is an ambitious and thoughtfully layered opening to a new series, one that leans into mystery, atmosphere, and gradual discovery rather than immediate clarity. While I occasionally found myself slowing down to keep the wider cast straight, Izol and Yilmaz served as strong emotional anchors and helped ground the story.
The central mystery is engaging and feels well constructed, and the world Mescal introduces is intriguing in its blend of past and future, tradition and progress. That mix sometimes felt deliberately fluid rather than firmly defined - an approach that may challenge some readers early on, but also creates a sense of depth and long-term possibility.
As a series opener, this novel feels very much like groundwork being laid. Not every element fully clicked for me yet, but I appreciated the ambition behind the storytelling and the care put into the mystery at its core. Overall, this is a promising start, and I'm interested to see how the characters, world, and larger narrative continue to sharpen and expand in future installments.

🔮 Looking Ahead
With its foundation now firmly in place, The Illumination: Izol feels like the beginning of a much larger journey. I'm curious to see how the characters and world come into sharper focus as the series continues.

🖋️ Guest Post from Mescal
What is the significance of the title?
It took me the better part of two years to come up with the title, most of my earlier
efforts, The Awakening, The Enlightenment, Revelation in The Woods, Izol’s
Awakening, and a few other indistinguishable ones, all left a hollow feeling causing me
to push on in my quest for the perfect pitch for this extraordinary story.
To say I struggled is an understatement. Days and nights filled with frustration,
contemplating, eliminating, anxiety, finally surrendering to the realization I may never
find the one that moved me in such a way that I would know unequivocally this was it,
the title that touched my heart.
And just when I thought of settling, it came, The Illumination, the shedding of light on an
ancient secret that leads Izol on her journey. I think what captivated me about the title
was the thought of light being expansive; whatever it illuminates transforms into
something compelling. In this instance, the revelation of two millennia of history
concurrently existing with Izol’s world is a secret she remains none the wiser of.
The struggle and weight of exitance it takes for these two dimensions to coexist in the
present, Izol’s world and Yilmaz’s curse, the culmination of things to come, which will
change their lives and those around them profoundly, all begins with a light cast on the
unknown, a light once revealed, leads Izol to her destiny and Yilmaz to his redemption.
Both worlds colliding in illumination.
🖋️Meet the Author Mescal (M.S. Tanager)
In my adolescent years, I was an extreme introvert, though I had a few friends I was close with; if you weren’t acquainted with me, you would probably perceive me as asocial. I believe it was in my mid-20’s that my persona changed. I graduated from college at twenty-three and began working part-time with a major US airline. I thought the job exciting and the ability to travel the world made the position hugely attractive.
My sojourn in the airline industry was only until I had decided on a permanent career path, or so I thought. Many years later, after traveling to a multitude of countries on five continents, having two boys who also traveled the globe with me, I find myself here, at this monumental moment where I’ve embarked on a new adventure, this all unfolding by happenstance, a bedtime story I told my nieces had etched its way in my mind.
The story slowly revealed itself as I sat having lunch in my office, on my commute home late at night, and while meandering the farmers market on weekends, I would see my story in my mind’s eye.
Finally, on a trip to Copenhagen in December five years ago, it beckoned me, the inner child, when I visited the statue of the Little Mermaid with my niece. Watching her entranced by the serin, I felt her wonderment as if reliving the experience of my first reading of the fairytale at the age of ten. A whispered voice caught my ear, and a single word summoned my heart. WRITE!
Invigorated by this calling, I set to paper what had been dancing in my head. Now here we are: the Izol series has been birthed. My grandmother’s words stood the test of time: “Wherever you are, there you’ll find yourself.”
