🦄 The Plain Little Unicorn – Children’s Book Review

“Jessica D. Adams and her daughter-illustrator Janelle M. Adams create a tender story about a unicorn who misses the coloring machine and worries she’ll never be chosen. The Plain Little Unicorn proves that love sees beyond appearances.”

I always look forward to a new release from Jessica D. Adams—her Underground Toy Society stories are as delightful as the multitude of fun printables she shares with readers and families. Today I’m especially excited to welcome her talented daughter, Janelle M. Adams, to the blog. Janelle—also known as Moon on YouTube—brings this newest book to life with bright, expressive illustrations, making this mother-daughter collaboration a true treat.

A Heartwarming Tale of Self-Acceptance

In this stand-alone addition to the Underground Toy Society world, a small unicorn is so excited to visit the toy factory that she accidentally skips the coloring machine. Without her rainbow mane, she’s labeled too plain and left in the back room of a toy store.

Rather than giving in to the pressure to change, the little unicorn holds on to the hope that someone will love her exactly as she is. Jessica D. Adams slips in just enough background about the Underground Toy Society so new readers feel right at home, while longtime fans will appreciate the familiar magic.

Why It Works for All Ages

This 41-page picture book is a gentle reminder for every child (and adult) who has ever felt different. The narrative celebrates individuality without preaching, and it quietly encourages kids to stay true to themselves, just like “Perfect Pearl,” as the story reminds us.

Parents will appreciate the subtle lessons about empathy and self-worth, and children will be drawn to the clear, encouraging message: you are unique and special exactly as you are.

Gorgeous Family Collaboration

The artwork is a showstopper. Janelle M. Adams, Jessica’s daughter, fills each page with soft color and movement that perfectly captures the unicorn’s emotions. Her playful yet polished style makes every spread sparkle, inviting readers to linger over the details.

✍️ About the Author

“Author Jessica D. Adams standing outdoors beside bright pink azaleas, smiling while holding a copy of her book The Underground Toy Society.”Jessica D. Adams writes children’s books for The Underground Toy Society, stories that inspire kids to love and appreciate what they have, think of others, and—ideally—keep their rooms tidy. Her two daughters serve as both inspiration and frequent co-illustrators. Jessica also penned the short time-travel chapter book "Meeting Grandmom," a heartwarming story that helps children and adults reflect on their family history and remember loved ones who have passed away.

Jessica envisions The Underground Toy Society traveling the globe, with many more books to come. While her goal is to encourage good habits and empathy, she notes with a smile that “individual results may vary”—the books are meant first and foremost for entertainment.

Raised in Catawissa, Pennsylvania, Jessica attended Southern Columbia Area High School, then earned her Occupational Therapy degree with honors after studies at Bloomsburg University and Thomas Jefferson University. She continues to live in Pennsylvania with her husband, Greg, and their two daughters.

We purchased this book last week, and it came just in time for our little one. It's such a sweet book. Jessica and her daughter did a beautiful job on this story. Congratulations to them both.
