Books, Beach and Booze!

Everyone in the beach town of Turtle Point comes to Ghostwriters, the craziest Bookbar on the Atlantic coast, where the party doesn't end until sunrise as people read their favorite books while sipping their favorite adult beverages.

The owner, an effervescent Redhead named Sienna McCaslin, loves two things: her Bookbar and her best friend, Pulitzer Prize winning author, Jasper George, who lost his passion for writing after a personal tragedy. The only thing Jasper writes these days is his name on a bar tab since he lives life at the bottom of a bourbon bottle.

Sienna is desperate to bring him back to the living, and her prayers are answered when a young woman comes to town looking for help with her manuscript.

However, Sienna's plan backfires when Jasper's mentoring of the aspiring author takes him further away from her, and when the manuscript is finished, Jasper is offered a job at the top literary agency in New York.

Sienna knows her love is in vain, so she is the one who leaves Turtle Point first by selling Ghostwriters and starting a new life in wine country. Unfortunately, Jasper realizes he loves her, but is it too late to bring her home before he loses his Redheaded girl and Ghostwriters forever?

My thoughts on The Redhead and the Ghostwriter

Redhead and the Ghostwriter book cover image

What could be better than owning a book store? Owning a book store with an attached bar on a South Carolina island!

The Plot:

Sienna McCaslin is the lucky woman that owns Ghostwriters, a bookbar where locals can relax and read or party hard acting out scenes from their favorite books, discussing books, fighting about books, or enjoying the camaraderie. Sienna loves her life and her best friend, Pulitzer Prize-winning author, Jasper George. Jasper lost his desire to write after a personal tragedy. Now he is seemingly content to be King of the Ghostwriter and preside over the nightly shenanigans. What will it take to pull him from the bottom of a bottle? Sienna believes she’s found the answer in aspiring author, Piper Marbury who is looking for a mentor. Is Sienna willing to risk losing Jasper by saving him?

The Feelings:

From the opening page, I was in tears. Sometimes they were tears of sadness, but mostly tears of laughter. Author Ivan Scott’s unique way with words and dialogue made this book a joy to read from start to finish. I read it late into the night as I could not put it down. I needed to know what was happening with this fun-loving, yet slightly deranged crew.

As a book reviewer, this story stole my heart. I love a good book where “books” are a character. Whether book quote competitions, masquerade parties dressed as your favorite character, or simply absorbing the bookish atmosphere, I longed to be right in the mix of this tale.

There is a subtle mystery vibe threaded throughout the story. I don’t want to give anything important away, but the reader will find a few twists and turns. For me, the main takeaway was friendship. This tale’s characters display an unparalleled depth of love and caring for their friends. They will wallow in pity with you and try to jolly you out of the pits of despair. If everything else has failed, they’ll share a bottle with you and see to it you get home by dawn while assuring you tomorrow will be a better day.

Reasons for my 5-Star rating:

I love books about books. “The Redhead and the Ghostwriter” appeals to me on a personal level.

The setting evoked a feeling of nostalgia and longing. I wanted to be friends with these people and live in the delightful Turtle Point.

The level of witty and sarcasm is high throughout the story. Crisp dialogue and believable characters enhance the readability.

The author’s style guarantees I’ll buy anything with his name on it.

I empathized with many of the feelings woven into the tale.

The book allows you to delve as deeply as you want in life, dreams, alcoholism, personal tragedy, and broken hearts. It’s a rare author that writes a tale that can be a personal study of life or a fun beach read. Ivan Scott has done just that.

When I turned the last page, I was disappointed that the book was done. I wanted to continue reading about the lives of these new friends I made.

Conclusion:

I highly recommend this book to all lovers of contemporary fiction, romance, strong characters (female & male), and heartfelt tales.

About Ivan Scott

Ivan Scott Author Profile image

Ivan Scott has lived in Atlanta for over 30 years. He is married to a Genuine Ginger, so having a redhead protagonist is a must.

He lives with his beautifully saucy wife, two troublemaking kids, and a Rat Terrier named Beesley in the Atlanta suburb of Sandy Springs.

He is diehard Detroit Lions fan (Yes, one of the few remaining), and like Billy from the story, he has a huge collection of the three B's: Bourbon, Bowties, and of course, Books!
