My Thoughts on The Registration
Madison Lawson’s “The Registration” is an exceptional work of speculative fiction that had me hooked from start to finish. The author’s writing style is cinematic, and the words flowed through my mind like a movie.
The novel is set in a dystopian world where chaos reigns after a civil war. To bring order, a system called The Registration is put in place, allowing people to register and kill one person in their lifetime for reasons like revenge, justice, or to end a family member’s suffering.
Lynell, the protagonist, is on the run for her life after hearing someone register her name while waiting to register the step-father who abused her for twenty years. She has to evade death for the next fourteen days, not knowing who her allies or enemies are.
As Lynell tries to keep her family and friends safe, she unearths secrets and forms alliances, making the story entertaining and engaging. The novel has elements of violence, abuse, and torture, but it also showcases the undying love, loyalty, and bonds of family.
If you enjoy speculative fiction, dystopian thrillers, and fast-paced action, “The Registration” is a perfect book for you.
I received a copy of the book for the tour. This review is my honest, unbiased opinion.

Guest Post from the Author of The Registration
Approaching Dystopian Worlds by Madison Lawson
Dystopian novels are extremely popular and have been far before The Hunger Games. I’m sure every reader picks up a dystopian novel for different reasons, but I’ve found that some of the most common reasons are because this fiction allows readers to experience the darker sides of humanity in a safe environment, knowing there will be some hope at the end of the book (typically). Despite the dark background, there are (hopefully) examples of love, trust, strength, hope, and more triumphing over the evil sewn into the DNA of humanity.
At least, that’s partly why I am drawn to dystopian fiction, both while reading and writing.
Any time I write a book, I’m partly working through something that either angers or confuses me. I have a question I need answering or a cathartic way to process my frustration or grief. This typically creates the basis of the world, setting, and plot of the book. But then I have to build the rest of the book around that center.
My approach to creating a dystopian society is usually convoluted and takes some time. I start with the living situations. Does it look like our world? Is technology better or worse? How do people get their homes? Can they afford to buy them, or are they designated certain houses? Then I consider the government, how it works and what it looks like, and religion. Is religion the cause of or center of the dystopian world (such as in The Handmaid’s Tale), or do they have completely different beliefs than we understand? Both of these things will exist, I just have to decide how much they affect everyday life and how important they are to the characters.
One of the main trends in dystopian fiction is having a “chosen one” overthrow the tyrannical government by the end of the book or series. I tend to avoid “saving the world.” In fact, I prefer keeping the dystopian system in place and, instead, finding hope in a new way. I like telling a personal story about one character who learns to find happiness within the dystopian society rather than ending the society. There will still be rebellions and the hope that one day the system will be defeated and a new, more hopeful one will take its place, but it’s not typically the story I want to tell.
My characters will find hope in the hopeless because sometimes that’s all we can do. We can’t always change the entire world, but we can change our world so it better serves our happiness.
