Excerpt from The Schoolmaster's Daughter
โYou seem to have taken a dislike to me,โ he remarked.
โI have.โ It came back promptly.
โIs my dancing really that bad?โ
โNo. You seem quite a capable dancer,โ she said as if forced to be fair against her inclination.
โThen Iโm afraid I donโt know what Iโve done to offend.โ
โIโm sure you donโt.โ
They crossed the room once more and came back together. Her hand was stiff in his own, and there was something unyielding in the way she moved through the steps. โAre you going to explain it to me?โ
She shrugged. โI know you for what you are.โ
โAnd what exactly is that?โ
โA fortune hunter.โ
It was stated so flatly, so calmly, and so completely correctly, that he couldnโt help himself: he threw back his head and laughed. She looked surprised. Perhaps he should have tried to disassemble, but there was a sharpness and confidence in her tone that made it impossible. However she knew, she did indeed know, and her forthrightness amused him.
โIโm sorry, Miss Cray. How did you guess?โ He did not bother to hide from his voice that he was impressed.
โWell, I at least give you credit for not trying to hide it now,โ she said a little dryly.
โHow could I? When you have shot the target so exactly in the bullโs-eye. Credit where credit is due.โ He gave a little mock bow.
โYou seem an unusual specimen of your species.โ
โThere are always a few outliers. Have you met so many of us?โ
โYou must realize Iโm quite used to dealing with your kind.โ
โAre you? How very humbling you are. And here I thought myself clever.โ

Guest Post by the Author of The Schoolmaster's Daughter
I didnโt do as much research as you might expect given that I was writing a historical novel. Most of my research was about confirming things Iโd learned from reading other regency novels. For example: I had it in my head that Bath, in the later years of the Regency Era, had lost some of its popularity and was no longer quite the hub of society as it had been previously.
This was important for making my story work, so I wanted to confirm and it was true. Bath originally became popular because it was considered good for ailments to go and drink and bathe in the water there. However, as so often happens, medical wisdom changed. Doctors started saying that sea bathing was better for your health. Which is when Brighton became popular, especially after the Regent started visiting that seaside town regularly.
One fun factoid I did discover while reading about Brighton (that in no way appears in my book so this factoid did not get used in The Schoolmasterโs Daughter) was the bathing wagons! Women would get into small, covered wagons that would then be drawn out into the water. Theyโd change in the wagons and then step out of them, right down into the water helped by people called Dippers!
Readers have a strong vision of the regency era as it appears in books and that was the world I wanted to write in. Itโs not always, completely historically accurate, but it evokes a common image of a place that people, myself included, enjoy visiting.
The one thing I did spend some time researching was a song. There is a musical moment in the story when our heroine is at the pianoforte and I wanted an authentic song of the time, that also thematically fitted with the book. I landed on The Passionate Shepherd to His Love by Christopher Marlow, a poem which was later put to music.
Two verses of the poem appear in the book:
Come live with me and be my love,
And we will all the pleasures prove,
That Valleys, groves, hills, and fields,
Woods, or steepy mountain yields.
And we will sit upon the Rocks,
Seeing the Shepherds feed their flocks,
By shallow Rivers to whose falls
Melodious birds sing Madrigals.
The Schoolmasterโs Daughter touches on themes of what money can and cannot buy, and a love song that dwells on the beauties of the earth, something which is incomparable and cannot truly be owned, seemed fitting for the moment.
