Published by Blessings Press on April 2024
Genres: Adult Non-Fiction 18+, Inspirational & Personal Growth
Format: eBook, Paperback
Pages: 138

With so many distortions of the essence of a woman, today more than ever, women need to ruthlessly examine their perceptions and reality of being a wife, and then align them with Truth so that they may become the best version of themselves as God had intended them to be.

In The “Sorta” Good Wife, Kim Hess explores how A Good Wife, as described in Proverbs 31:10-31, beautifully portrays the dignity of being a spouse as a wife. However, this expectation gets warped by trauma, sin, fears, and lies, and many women do not know how to embrace and enjoy this vocation. A woman must align herself to Truth and rely on His power, not her own. The Lord desires to be a part of every aspect of daily life and every season of her life, so that she may reach her full potential.

My thoughts on The Sorta Good Wife

The Sorta Good Wife by Kim Hess is a refreshing, down-to-earth devotional for women juggling marriage, family, and faith without the pressure of perfection. With a lighthearted tone, Hess encourages readers to embrace their imperfections while still striving to grow in their relationships and spiritual lives.

Each entry blends personal stories, biblical wisdom, and practical advice, making it both relatable and uplifting. The sections end with a chance to reflect on the verse and how it can be interpreted to fit the reader’s circumstances.

This devotional stands out for its message of grace and self-acceptance. It reminds us that being “sorta good” is more than enough on this journey. It is perfect for anyone looking for encouragement, real talk, and a little faith-filled humor!

I received a copy of the book for the tour. This review is my honest, unbiased opinion.

Kim Hess Author image

Kim Hess is a quirky, inquisitive, and compassionate child of God. She rocks being a homeschool mom and teacher, but freely admits to learning more from her students than teaching them.

Kim has raced enduro karts, soared on a flying trapeze, and passed the motorcycle license class, but now prefers to take adrenaline-free walks with her husband.

Her favorite pastime is being a prayer minister who relentlessly asks, “Do you want prayer?”

Thyself

By Kim Hess

Sometimes a verse intensely impacts my heart and mind, like this one:

39 And a second is like it, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. Matthew 22:39

Frequently, homilies and sermons emphasize the word neighbor. Pastors may spend time defining who is a neighbor and how to express love toward this person.

But when we emphasize the word yourself, the verse challenges a person to contemplate how they treat themselves, not in a greedy, narcissistic way, but in a self-care manner. Do Christians love themselves the way Jesus wants us to love others? Do we love the person that God the Father specifically created to live at this particular time? Do we understand that we are not merely humans, but children of God—royalty?

As a member of a healing prayer ministry team, we often hear people, especially woman, berate themselves, ignore their own needs, set unrealistic expectations, or worse. This verse shines a light onto their perspective and confronts their actions and responses, especially when we ask them to complete the command.

I’ll start reciting the verse, then pause before the end with my voice inflecting upward in question, “Love thy neighbor as …”?

“Thyself.” People reply in a whisper, in a conversational tone, or between sobs.

Then, I ask, “How do you love yourself?” They always pause and contemplate the question.

“Who Do You Love?”

By Kim Hess

When a child seeks attention,
You joyfully indulge their request.
But, do you attend to your desires?

When a relative needs compassion,
You tenderly embrace the tearful face.
But, do you permit yourself to grieve?

When a family needs a meal,
You exquisitely prepare a feast.
But, do you nourish your soul?

When a stranger pleads for resources,
You abundantly bless the impoverished.
But, do you appreciate your provisions?

When a senior needs assistance,
You prioritize their request.
But, do you rank yourself valuable?

When a friend implores help with appointments,
You immediately rearrange your agenda.
But, do you schedule care for yourself?

When a colleague seeks approval,
You affirm with benedictions,
But do you acknowledge your talents?

When an acquaintance requests impossible prayers,
You dutifully fold your hands,
But, do you pray for yourself?

When He declared: love thy neighbor,
You eagerly responded,
But, do you love yourself?
