From the bestselling author of The Storyteller’s Secret comes an unflinching exploration of betrayal, forgiveness, and the healing power of a second chance.
Celine’s life is spiraling out of control. She’s in danger of losing the beloved equestrian farm that was her childhood home. Her distant husband, Eric, is devoting a suspicious amount of time to a stunning new colleague. Then her young son, Brian, receives a devastating cancer diagnosis. As her life falls apart, she faces an impossible fight
Felicity has uprooted her career and her teenage son, Justin, to get closer to Eric. She’s tired of keeping his secrets—that Eric’s frequent “business trips” have been time spent with her and Justin. Felicity is determined to get her happily ever after, even if it means confronting Celine at a delicate time.
But when Brian’s prognosis worsens, and a transplant from Justin becomes his best chance at survival, Felicity must make a wrenching decision about her son’s well-being—and Celine must accept that the “other woman” is her only hope.
In another life Celine and Felicity might have been friends. Can they put aside the pain between them to do what’s best for their families—and their own futures?

Which was the hardest character to write? The easiest?
Without a doubt, the most challenging character to write was Brian. As an innocent child facing an unimaginable tragedy, his journey deeply resonated with me. When I was nine years old, I underwent open-heart surgery. The doctors warned my parents that my chances of survival were slim due to the complexity of my condition. I vividly remember lying in that hospital bed, feeling utterly helpless and alone, questioning why I had to endure such pain while other children lived carefree lives.
Writing about Brian’s battle with an unexpected illness brought me back to those moments. It reminded me of the wires tethering me to machines, the desperate pleas to my parents to take me home, and the longing to return to a life untouched by this newfound reality. Weeks of lying in that hospital bed felt like an eternity, but eventually, I recovered.
Through Brian’s story, I revisited those raw emotions, channeling them into his character and letting them flow onto the page. His fight is profoundly significant, but writing it was a deeply personal and emotional process that tugged at familiar heart strings.
In contrast, writing Celine’s character came more naturally, though no less meaningfully. As a mother, I’ve always strived to protect my children from hardship, to fill their lives with love, confidence, and strength. But there are moments as a parent when you feel completely powerless, unable to shield them from life’s unpredictability.
Celine embodies the qualities of a fiercely devoted mother. She is present, warm, and unwavering in her determination to protect her child. Even when gripped by debilitating fear, she remains steadfast, embodying resilience, selflessness, and unyielding strength.
Creating Celine was a joy. I drew from every emotion I’ve ever felt as a mother—love, fear, hope, and courage—and infused them into her character. Writing her allowed me to celebrate the beauty and depth of motherhood, even in the face of life’s most daunting challenges.
