Series: The Time Trials #1
Published by Tiny Fox Press on 09/21/2021
Genres: Fiction, Science Fiction, Teen, Time-Travel, Young Adult
Format: eBook, Hardcover, Paperback
Pages: 358

After the deaths of his parents in a horrific car accident — one that he considers his own fault — Walkman-toting, guitar-playing Finn Mallory would do anything to turn back time…to press “rewind.”

When he’s admitted on a full scholarship to an elite boarding school, things get more complicated: he becomes an “Unfortunate” in a sea of rich kids whose shoes cost more than his late parents made in a week. An invitation to a boring-sounding history club changes everything, as this team does much more than research and field trips.

Well….they do take field trips. Just not the kind you’re thinking. For Finn, the present was already enough to deal with, but now he finds that he also must reckon with the past in more ways than one.

My thoughts on The Time Trials

“Think of time like a book with an unlimited number of pages. As time unfolds, our stories are printed into this book, which constantly turns the pages. If you go back to a past page, scratch parts out and write in changes to this book, would that magically change what happens on the next page?”

This quote early in the book was mind-blowing. Despite the widespread belief that any slight change in the past could result in catastrophic consequences in the future, the idea of comparing time to the pages of a book was ingenious. It’s a metaphor that readers would understand best, and only an author could have come up with it.

From that point, I knew the book would be captivating. Finn and the Young Historians began as four distinct teenagers who could barely tolerate one another. However, they quickly became allies in various ways.

The book’s prominent themes are grief, friendship, angst, and fortitude, with a budding romance appropriate for the intended audience. The four main characters are relatable, representing the outcast, the princess, the female jock, and the nerd. These qualities can easily be found in every one of us..

One of the characters is on the autism spectrum, and I’m not familiar enough with autism to know if the book handles it appropriately. However, given the book’s high quality, it’s reasonable to assume that the authors have addressed any potential concerns.

The book is well-written, with a consistent pace throughout. The storyline is intriguing, thrilling, and sure to keep readers turning the pages. With a gaming aspect, the novel’s unique time-bending concept, and well-developed characters, The Time Trials should appeal to a broad audience.
