My thoughts on Traveling Tootsie
“Traveling Tootsie” is a delightful children’s picture book that explores themes of travel, adventure, coping skills, and creating fun. Authors Karen and Kathy Honaker based the story on their own childhood adventures with parents who traveled for work.
The main characters, a brother and sister, devise an ingenious plan to hide their teddy bear, Traveling Tootsie, in their father’s shoe when he packs his luggage. From there, Tootsie sneaks out and visits all the sights in Washington, DC. When their father returns home, Tootsie fills in the kids on all the monumental sights he visited on his adventure.
This cute premise helps children cope with missing a parent and teaches them to create fun adventures without leaving home. The bright and vivid illustrations by Chiara Civati create a soft, dreamlike feel to the tale.
I highly recommend this book to families, libraries, daycares, and schools.
I received a copy of the book for the tour. This review is my honest, unbiased opinion.

What it Was Really Like to Grow Up With Traveling Tootsie
One of us would walk by our parent’s bedroom door and see the suitcase open on their
bed. We knew what we had to do. We sat on the pink shag carpeting of our room and plotted
out our plan. As soon as it was safe, we sneaked into our parent’s room, took one of dad’s
shoes out of the cloth shoe bag, and pushed Tootsie way down inside to the toes of his shoes.
We put the shoe back just like we found it, ran back to our room, and giggled non-stop!
After we dropped dad off at the airport, we thought about where he was going, and we
couldn’t wait to hear the stories he would tell when he got back. We had other benefits of dad
traveling, too…we always got to get a box of “sugar-cereal’ and we would spend a long time
weighing the pros and cons of which TV dinner to pick out of the freezer at the grocery
store…the favorite meal and dessert never seemed to line up quite right!
The days passed and we would head to the airport to pick up our dad. We would be so
excited when he came out to the car, and one of the first things we would shout was, “Where
were you when you found Tootsie?” We all laughed, and dad would tell us where he was, and
then we would head home for more stories.
Our dad loved photography, so the sharing didn’t stop there. When the film got
developed, we would set up the slide projector and screen, do a few “shadow animals” with our
hands, and watch the slideshow and experience faraway places right there in our family room.
He had a goal to visit all 50 states before he died, and he made it. He shared all of them with us
with stories, photographs, and gifts.
These memories are some of the best of our childhood and have instilled a love of travel
in us. This is one reason we wanted to write this book. We wanted to spark curiosity and
children’s imaginations and help to foster the parent-child relationship within families.
You may not always be able to travel somewhere, but it sure doesn’t mean you can’t learn
about it and enjoy it!
