When Power Corrupts, Justice Takes an Unexpected Turn

When Florida investor and real estate developer Dylan Tomassi attends the opening of a major addition to a private Connecticut school he funded through his charitable foundation, publicity from the event draws the ire of a powerful teachers' union leader determined to extinguish all forms of private school expansion.

While she forges an unlikely alliance with a corrupt environmental activist to embezzle funds earmarked for education, Dylan becomes the victim of a series of mysterious attacks against him and his business interests. After being shot at and brutally assaulted, Dylan decides to disappear with a former flame who has unexpectedly reentered his life, while his lawyers and the police investigate.

The couple rekindle their relationship as they explore various corners of the country from California to the American heartland. As the investigations unfold, it appears the culprit may never be discovered until a series of events within the alliance result in a stunning turn of events.

Two Lefts Don't Make a Right is a highly entertaining tale of corruption, mystery and reprisal.

🖋️ Author Guest Post

What happens when a thriller writer imagines a call from Netflix? Dan Romanello shares a witty look at adaptations we love, the ones we’re still waiting for, and why he’s ready when Hollywood calls.

I’M ADAPTABLE

by Dan Romanello

Ted Sarandos, Netflix Co-CEO responsible for content operations, greets me warmly in the executive jet lounge at Tampa International airport. “Are you ready for the trip to California? We start production tomorrow.”

I smile broadly as I glance out the window and see the Netflix Gulfstream G550 sitting on the tarmac, stairwell down, gleaming in the afternoon sun.

Okay, that hasn’t happened yet. However, authors and readers alike dream of their favorite books being made into movies, streaming series, or television shows (is that still a thing?). So let’s have some fun with it!

Here are some examples of authors I enjoy, along with the actors who portrayed their characters on film. One of my favorites, John MacDonald, who wrote extensive Florida-based fiction, had several novels adapted into movies. TRAVIS MCGEE, named after one of his main characters and starring Sam Elliot in the lead role, was based upon his book, THE EMPTY COPPER SEA. And who could forget the classic 1962 movie CAPE FEAR, based on his novel, THE EXECUTIONERS, starring Gregory Peck and Robert Mitchum. Later editions of epic films often pale in comparison to the originals, but that was not the case with the 1991 remake of the same title, featuring Robert De Niro and Nick Nolte.

Another excellent movie adaptation was the Jack Reacher films based upon the character in the Lee Child novels. Despite the difference in height between the fictional character and the actor, Tom Cruise was excellent in the leading role in both JACK REACHER and the sequel, JACK REACHER: NEVER GO BACK. Mr. Cruise did not return for a third movie, but the character lives on in the streaming series REACHER, starring Alan Ritchson. Which actor do you prefer?

Finally, Titus Welliver played the conflicted Harry Bosch in BOSCH, a streaming series based on novels written by Michael Connelly.

Several books and their characters that I enjoy have never been adapted to film. A few that come to my mind include the lovable psychopathic vigilante Serge Storm in the series written by Tim Dorsey, the Stone Barrington character from the recently departed Stuart Woods (he will be missed), and the dandy private eye, Archy McNally, featured in the books by Lawrence Saunders and Vincent Lardo. In case you haven’t noticed, I’m a huge fan of mystery thrillers set in the eccentrically diverse state of Florida that I call home.

Presently, the increased demand for content among the myriad streaming services, including Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, Apple, and every television network’s version, has created more opportunities for writers. Recent authors who have enjoyed success include Colleen Hoover (a personal hero of mine), IT ENDS WITH US, May Cobb’s THE HUNTING WIVES, and Willy Vlautin’s THE NIGHT ALWAYS COMES.

Which of your favorite authors would you like to see have their work turned into film?

I’d love to hear your thoughts and comments. And, Ted, if you’re reading this, or perhaps Jeff Bezos, hit me up and let’s talk!
