🖋️ Guest Post from Nabila Khashoggi
Here is a guest essay from the author discussing connecting with people through cooking. That is followed by a video book trailer for your pleasure.
Cooking for Connection
For me, cooking has never been just about feeding people. It’s about connecting with them. Some of my most meaningful memories happened around a table, sharing food that carried stories, history, and love. That’s part of the reason I created The Explorer’s Cookbook. I wanted to give families a way to not only taste the world but also experience the connection that comes from preparing and enjoying a meal together.
When I was developing recipes for the book (8 years in the making!), I thought about more than flavors and techniques. I pictured families in kitchens, parents chopping vegetables while kids measure spices, laughter over a dough that didn’t quite behave, and the pride in serving a dish that everyone helped create. In those moments, the food is almost secondary. What really matters is the bond you’re building.
Cooking together invites conversation. While your hands are busy, your mind relaxes. Stories flow. You hear about your child’s day at school, or your partner shares a memory from their own childhood kitchen. When you prepare a recipe from another country, those conversations expand even further. You talk about different cultures, traditions, and ways of life. Food becomes a bridge, not just to faraway places, but to each other.
One of my favorite moments from creating the cookbook was testing a Scottish Hotch Potch recipe with friends. None of us had made one before, and we crowded into my kitchen, learning together. The spices and aromatics filled the air, sparking conversation about travel dreams and past adventures. By the time we sat down to eat, it wasn’t just the hotch potch that had warmed us. It was the shared effort, the shared discovery, the shared time.
I believe that connection is the true heart of cooking. Recipes are simply the vehicle. When you cook with someone, you’re collaborating, creating, and sometimes even problem-solving together. You’re giving your time, your attention, and your care, and that’s a gift in itself
With The Explorer’s Cookbook, my hope is that readers will use these recipes not only to try new flavors but also to deepen their connections with the people they cook for and with. Whether it’s a quiet Tuesday dinner with the family or a weekend feast with friends, let your kitchen be the place where you explore the world and each other’s hearts…one dish at a time.
Because at the end of the day, the most important ingredient in any recipe is the company you share it with.
