ABOUT OLYMPIC VISTA CHRONICLES
Everything twelve-year-old Adelaide Winter knows about her Washington state hometown is turned on its head when Darius Belcouer moves to Olympic Vista at the end of summer 1986.
The two become fast friends as they bond over the mystery of a local haunted house Darius wants to explore. The house, it turns out, is only the tip of the iceberg. They quickly discover the more they dig, the more they uncover, and the trail leads back to The Link, a research and development facility in town. Together, Adelaide and her friends delve into the strange occurrences around Olympic Vista.
A tale of horror, friendship, and coming of age in the late 1980s.

Excerpt from Yesterday’s Gone
Darius glanced over at Adelaide. She looked out toward the playground. “So, I heard this place is weird,” he said. “Because of The Link.”
Adelaide’s gaze was still on the playground. Tetsu shrugged. Sophie flicked her hair over her shoulder and smiled.
“They do a lot of experiments there, I guess,” Kurt said. “They say it doesn’t affect us and there’s a lot of safety protocols in place. Between you and me, though,” Kurt said, leaning in, “it’s full of commies. They are the real threat.”
“Come on, Kurt,” Sophie said as she rolled her eyes.
Kurt pursed his lips and looked at the ground. “That’s what my dad says.”
“No one believes that. And the other stuff is just rumours,” Tetsu said. “Got nothin’ to do with commies or Nazis. It’s just some stupid science building and observatory.”
“What about the haunted house?” Darius had thought about it nonstop since he’d heard about it yesterday. He wanted to ask Dillon or the twin boys more about it, but he hadn’t seen them at the school. “Have you guys ever gone there?”
“What haunted house?” Adelaide’s eyes flicked back to him.
“The one on Hyacinth Street. It isn’t far from where I live.” Darius liked her eyes on him.
“That’s a really nice area,” Sophie cooed.
Darius shuffled a step away from Sophie. Unlike with Adelaide, he didn’t like how she looked at him.
“I was going to check it out.” Darius ran his hand through his hair and looked back at Adelaide. “Tonight.”
Adelaide cocked her head and looked at him. “I’m in.”
Darius grinned.

My thoughts on Yesterday’s Gone
A young-adult tale with overtones of horror and lots of nostalgia.
Yesterday’s Gone takes you back to the carefree days of being a youth in the 80s, when life was simpler but no less scary.
Olympic Vista may look like a sleepy small town to the naked eye, but there are plenty of sinister happenings in town. The main characters start with entering a local haunted house and things turn scary from then on.
This is book one of a novella series so we spend a little more time learning about the settings and people than actually solving mysteries ala the Hardy Boys. I fully expect many of these mysteries and cliffhangers to be resolved in future issues.
The intrigue leaves you cheering for our young sleuths and grimacing at many of the unlikeable adult characters. The entire book keeps you riding an intense wave of foreboding. You know bad things are coming, possibly from the adults that should be protecting the youth.
I can’t wait to read more from author Kelly Pawlik. She has a descriptive way with words that keeps you turning page after page and will leave you begging for more.
I received a copy of the book for the tour. This review is my honest, unbiased opinion.

A Guest Post from the Author
A Book For The Whole Family
First off, a huge thank you to Gina Rae for having me on the blog. I’m so happy you agreed to be a part of the book tour for Yesterday’s Gone, book one in The Olympic Vista Chronicles.
Family Reading
My husband and I started reading to our kids at an early age. Both of us were avid readers growing up and we wanted to help foster the same love of reading in our own kids. Our youngest is still working on learning to read independently. She’s getting there but isn’t confident enough yet to have mastered it. Our other two go through phases but can both be quite voracious readers.
Something we’ve done quite a few times is read a book together. It becomes a great routine, especially in the greyer, colder weather of the fall and summer. We all settle down in the living room, tucked under blankets or nestled into the cushions, and then either my husband or I will read a chapter of a book aloud. We’ve done this quite a few books, but one of the most recent ones is Yesterday’s Gone. It’s such a strange feeling to hear a book I wrote read aloud, but our kids are loving it.
I originally set out to write a quick, fun read for adults who have a nostalgia for the 80s. (Remember the freedom of being a kid in a world without cell phones? A time where you could ride around all day and just be home for dinner.) It was a hit with a certain crowd, but when my family went camping and forgot to bring the next book in The Series of Unfortunate Events, the kids begged me to read from Yesterday’s Gone. And then they asked for another chapter. And another. They recommended it to friends who loved it. And so, I discovered I’d accidentally written a book that was a hit with middle-grade and YA readers, as well as adults. In short, a book for the whole family.

This sounds quite nostalgic, although I was planning my wedding in the early 80s. Great post Gina.
Haha. I feel ya, Carla. I was having my children in the early 80s! Thanks for visiting.
I don’t like to think about how far ago the 80s was either, Carla!
