Genres: Fiction, Contempoary Romance
Format: eBook
Pages: 304
Meet Kriss: astronomy grad student head home to her small town with a Ph.D. survival plan--skate and graduate. No falling involved. Of any sort.
And Chase: her number one fan since high school and the firefighter paramedic who would give everything to catch her when she falls.
Kriss heads home to her small prairie town with 98% of an astrophysics PhD, a load of memories she’d rather not think about, and a survival plan: skate and graduate. Her plan doesn’t include the attention of a familiar admirer from the nearby fire station, one with a ridiculously impressive physique, a hidden singing talent, and a smile dazzling enough to sweep her off her skates. Before she knows it, she’s falling for him—hard.
Chase has settled into the rhythms of his small-town firefighter routine, but he remembers Kriss from high school: the starry-eyed skater girl on her way out the door of his life. Now she’s back, just as gorgeous as ever, spinning around the next-door rink without a care in the world. Or so he thinks, until Kriss is targeted with mysterious acts of vandalism designed to derail her dreams.
Can he help Kriss find the courage to stand up under the attacks and trust herself to love again?

He rounded the first corner at the far end of the field and snuck a glance back toward the rink just in time to watch Kriss’s long ponytail sail out behind her helmet with another tight spin. That one must not have gone quite as planned, because she stumbled a little and lurched sideways. But she recovered gracefully enough with a quick laugh a moment later, as if she enjoyed the thrill of almost wiping out on the concrete.
Yup. Gotta fall to get better. His ass knew as well as anyone else’s, after too many falls on that very same rink, shuffling his own inline skates and hockey stick around one of the goals in his spare time.
Too much of his spare time. But he wasn’t so bad on wheels himself, these days—MVP on the fire department’s informal team, crushing the police department’s lousy attempts at rivalry in the yearly Battle of the Badges tournament.
His high school self would die a thousand deaths before admitting it, but young Chase had taken up street hockey for a very… specific reason. Kriss had been just as badass on her skates all those years ago as a senior at Sacreola High, three years ahead of him. Hot, smart, and senior—and totally out of his league.
She had graduated and moved on without giving him so much as a second glance. But his newfound love for skating had stuck around long enough to turn him into a decent hockey player on the side. No harm done.

Guest Post from the author of Skate Cute
As a writer and storyteller, I can’t resist good imagination. Imagination unlocks the doors of our hearts and dives straight into the deepest part of our humanity, freeing us to wonder at our own stories and those of the “characters” around us. And who best to teach us the paths of imagination than our beloved youngsters?
When I saw from the blog’s bio that you’re a “book-obsessed Nana,” I couldn’t resist sending in this gem of imagination that I jotted down earlier this summer when my two boys and I tumbled out of school and into the front yard to play together in our make-believe “sailing ship” underneath the lilac hedge.
And so, without further ado, my crew and I present…
The Lilac Ship
“She’s wintered well enough. I think she’s still seaworthy.” I surveyed the ship moored to
the corner of our front yard, then cocked an eyebrow at my crew. “Wanna take her out
again?”
The short sailor’s blue eyes sparked with excitement as he tumbled out my front door. No
shirt, no shoes—no surprise. His brother followed, shoed at least, thanks to his extra two
years of responsibility. And experience with wood splinters.
Blond heads bobbed across the yard in the direction of our worthy vessel, stooping to
grab garden gloves from the rock next to the path. The elder captain barked orders to the
younger cook as we all bent to clear the detritus from the dock, shoving aside the
accumulation of too many chilly months of neglect. Broken bits of wood and foam from
the neighbor’s construction projects, grocery bags blown in by the wind, and of course,
the shoots of new greenery from the Lilac Ship’s enthusiastic efforts at its own upkeep.
At long last, we pushed aside the low-hanging branches and stepped on board.
“I’ll break off this one, it poked me,” chirped the captain from the forecastle, snapping
off the offending shoot from the main mast. As his taller first mate, I offered sincere
gratitude, crouching to brush undergrowth out of my old station near the poop deck.
“There’s pill bugs in my cook spot,” the cook reported. We all dropped what we were
doing and bent our heads to see. Sure enough. After a brief discussion about the
creatures—crew additions or culinary supplements?—we adopted them into our onboard
menagerie (one should never sail without half a zoo along for fun) and got back to work.
The crow’s nest had leafed over. Which proved to be a benefit, given the heat of the
sunbeams bearing down on our spot. Sea level we are not and some of us fuss about sunscreen. But a few modifications to the canopy provided at least a window for spying on the nearby sidewalk. In case any unsuspecting pirates happen to stroll by.
The deck needed to be borrowed again from the spare roofing material in the garage and
then swabbed by eager deck hands until the tiny bug cocoons underneath had found new
homes. Not as animate, they were, and thus not adopted as the pill bugs had been.
And then—ah! The thrill of discovery! A passing pirate had discarded a pristine metal
spyglass! The enterprising spiders who had taken up residence in the tube were willing to
relocate as well, and the spyglass was put to immediate use… by the cook… who took it
from the captain… who wanted it back… who made a logical if selfish argument based
on chain of command… which soon had the cook in tears…
We made it up. The spyglass settled for a time-share arrangement, based on proximity to
land. (Luckily, the cook just wanted to watch for unicorns in the water). And we set sail.
