My Grandma and Grandpa Rock children's book review featuring the colorful book cover on a playful musical background

Grandparents rock in all kinds of ways-and Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo have created a joyful, toe-tapping celebration of what makes every grandparent special.

When rock & roll royalty Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo write a children's book called My Grandma and Grandpa Rock!, you can probably expect a little rhythm. What I wasn't expecting was just how sweet, colorful, and inclusive this celebration of grandparents would be.

I originally read this one through NetGalley and then shared it with my grandkids, which turned out to be the perfect way to experience it. The rhyming text practically begs to be read aloud, Tiffany Everett's vibrant illustrations give little readers plenty to explore, and the message is one I especially love: grandparents don't have to be actual rock stars to rock.

There are all kinds of ways to be an amazing grandma or grandpa-and this book celebrates them all.

I'm a firm believer that everyone should read children's books. Here's why →

Quick Take: A colorful, toe-tapping celebration of grandparents in all their wonderful variety. With playful rhymes, vibrant illustrations, and plenty of heart, My Grandma and Grandpa Rock! is especially fun when shared aloud with the littles.

Here's what worked for me, and where the story really shines.

My Thoughts

My Grandma and Grandpa Rock! is every bit as fun as you would expect from Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo. Written in rhyme, it has a wonderful rhythm for reading aloud-which seems especially fitting coming from two members of rock & roll royalty.

The colorful, vibrant illustrations by Tiffany Everett immediately caught my attention, but what I loved most was the way the book celebrates so many different kinds of grandparents. Some might sing or dance, some have interesting jobs or hobbies, and some simply have their own special way of moving through the world. The message is clear: there are all kinds of ways to ROCK, and every grandparent has something worth celebrating.

I read this one aloud to my grandkids, which is really the perfect way to enjoy it. The rhyme keeps the story moving, the illustrations give everyone plenty to look at, and the whole book has an upbeat energy that's hard to resist. Don't be surprised if toes start tapping-or if you and the littles are dancing before you reach the end.

This is one of those picture books that genuinely works for both generations. Kids get a lively, colorful story, while grandparents get a joyful reminder that being a grandma or grandpa doesn't mean fitting into any particular mold.

Final Thoughts

Bright, energetic, inclusive, and full of heart, My Grandma and Grandpa Rock! is a celebration of grandparents in all their wonderful variety. Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo know a thing or two about rocking, and they've turned that idea into a delightful reminder that you don't need a guitar or a stage to do it.
