About Frederick J Burns
Frederick J Burns, always an artist on the inside, breaks through his trial attorney exterior at age 63, to write and illustrate his first children’s book, AND THE TREES TALKED BACK.
Three years in the making, Burns strives to convey a world where commonalities are more important than differences, where empathy is more important than disdain, and where making friends is more important than creating enemies.
With no formal art training, Burns enjoys working in and learning new mediums and styles. His art has won awards in juried competitions, been displayed on billboards, in government offices, the D’Amour Museum of Fine Art, and now graces the cover of Dave Brinnel's second CD, ALONE.
His detailed illustrations of trees using pen and ink with washes of watercolor have been compared to the fantastical illustrations of Arthur Rackham and Maurice Sendak.
Burns lives in the Pioneer Valley of Western Massachusetts with his wife, Heather, and two dogs, where he is developing ideas for his next book.

I rarely, if ever, watch TV. Not that there is anything wrong with TV. In fact, there are many great shows on TV with intelligent, humorous, interesting, inventive, and informative writing. There are many engaging and wonderful actors as well. It’s just that most of the time, I prefer to be creative myself than to be entertained. I am always open to ideas that might lead to me doing something creative or artistic.
For instance, one fall I had come across some particularly colorful maple leaves. I was inspired to create a large copper wall sculpture of a branch with leaves. I bought copper pipe that could be bent into shapes resembling a branch and bought copper sheet that I could cut into leaf shapes. I soldered copper wire into the leaves then soldered the leaf stems into holes and drilled into the branch. Once everything was soldered, I applied acrylic paints to the leaves.
Another time I saw a large board of purple heartwood and was inspired to design and build a contemporary floor clock with an 18-inch diameter clock face of tiger-striped maple and ebony formed into the shape of piano keys, each a different length for the 12-hour indicators.
My current project is a self-portrait in oil painted on canvas that was inspired by a cloud formation that I thought looked like a man reclining with his head buried in his arm, that I came across by chance about a month ago. I came home and tried as best as I could to photograph myself in that same pose. Then I used a photo editor to emphasize the light and dark areas. Finally, I transferred the image to the canvas using a projector.

I really love trees and traveled across the country to go to Sequoia and King’s Canyon National Parks just to be among the sequoias.
