Breaking the Mold is a science fiction novel of the near future that follows an eclectic group of characters as they are confronted with the threat of invading interstellar slime molds. The story takes place around the year 2065 and follows a handful of characters who meet in a sandwich shop, little knowing they may be called on to become humanity’s saviors.

An approaching interstellar object crashes into a California coast golf course restaurant, where the main characters are attending a soft-open event. A journalist trying to get a scoop gets horrifically subsumed by the life form, which is on a feeding path across the golf course. The group enrolls a quirky AI to help them communicate with the organism — which appears to be unkillable as it spreads all over the Earth — to release the journalist without killing him. Meanwhile, he is undergoing numerous ego-blowing and hallucinogenic experiences.

🛸 My Thoughts on Amorphous

Amorphous: Breaking the Mold is a bold and eccentric science fiction novel set around the year 2065. The story kicks off with an interstellar object crashing into a golf course restaurant during a soft-opening event—a quirky setup that introduces us to a group of wildly different characters who just happen to be in the wrong place at the weirdest time.

The invader? A shape-shifting, ego-melting slime mold from space. One unfortunate journalist gets fully absorbed by the organism, triggering a strange, often hallucinogenic inner journey. Meanwhile, the rest of the crew scrambles to understand what they’re dealing with—enlisting the help of a smart-mouthed AI to try and communicate with the extraterrestrial entity.

This book thrives on its dialogue-driven storytelling. The conversations carry the action, revealing a lot about the characters’ motivations and relationships. It’s clever, offbeat, and packed with ideas, but its structure may be jarring for readers expecting a traditional narrative arc. If you’re not prepared for a more experimental, conversational style, you might find the pacing uneven or the plot harder to follow.

That said, Amorphous will absolutely resonate with readers who enjoy genre-bending sci-fi, surreal humor, and stories that don’t color inside the lines. The characters are distinct, diverse, and just grounded enough to carry the wild premise.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ (3/5 stars) – Quirky near-future sci-fi with big ideas and bold style

Gina, thanks for this thoughtful review. When I finished reading it, I thought: "She gets me!" It's definitely not for the right-off-the-bat, action-packed dystopian future reader. Hopefully, it will reach optimistic nerdy types like myself! It might interest you to know that my chapter structure was somewhat modeled after John Brunner's "Stand on Zanzibar" (which I was surprised to discover was inspired by Dos Passos's USA Trilogy) although the story and attitude are not. Thanks again. (P.S., sequel in the works)
