My thoughts on Beyond Invisible
Beyond Invisible is book two of the Better Together duology. I strongly recommend you read book one first. I always feel that books in a series should be read in the proper order, although I realize many books can be read as stand-alone tales. This book especially relies on the situations explained in Book One, Being is Better.
In this story, we continue with Amber and Missy developing their friendship and navigating the new circumstances associated with being in High School. The author also adds in a bit of mystery as the girls attempt to discover the reasons Missy’s brother suddenly joined the Army and subsequently lost his life in Afghanistan.
Missy’s father is back on the scene, bringing along his new girlfriend. Thankfully, Amber is there to help ease her friend through the anger issues involving her father.
Staying true to girls this age, there is a bit of romance and some silliness. It’s refreshing to see the girls have a respite from the illnesses and drama they deal with.
Just like the first story, this one starts slow and builds toward the end giving you just enough tidbits to keep turning the pages. Amber’s epilepsy is still present but takes a backseat to other characters this time.
If you are looking for a touching story of hidden illnesses like epilepsy and depression, this will satisfy you. If you are more interested in the mystery and drama of broken families, you will love it, too.
I was saddened to learn that the author succumbed to her rare breast cancer so there will be no more books in the series. Marjorie Jackson may have become a writer later in her life, but she certainly gave it her all with the friendship tale of Missy and Amber.
