Review: Breakthrough Lies by Jay B. Greene | Investigative Thriller
The story shows what can happen when greed, politics, and public image are valued more than human lives.
Some thrillers entertain by asking readers to imagine the impossible. Breakthrough Lies takes the opposite approach. Jay B. Greene builds a story that feels unsettling precisely because it seems so plausible. Set in Florida during the late 1980s, the novel follows investigative reporter Jack Kendall as he uncovers the truth behind a controversial teen rehabilitation program whose public image hides a far darker reality.
Although this is the fifth book in the Jack Kendall Mystery series, new readers can comfortably begin here. The story stands on its own while offering a compelling blend of investigative journalism, political corruption, and high-stakes suspense. More thriller than traditional mystery, Breakthrough Lies focuses less on solving a crime and more on exposing a system that has been allowed to operate unchecked.
About Breakthrough Lies
When sixteen-year-old Julie France McLaughlan is taken from her home by a controversial teen rehabilitation program called Breakthrough, her mother is told it is for the girl's own good. But Julie has never used drugs, and her sudden disappearance leaves her family desperate for answers.
Investigative reporter Jack Kendall soon discovers that Julie's younger brother has already been confined within the same program, where humiliation, isolation, and psychological abuse are disguised as treatment. As Jack and his wife Bobbie follow the evidence, they uncover a network of corruption protected by political influence, powerful connections, and people willing to look the other way.
With time running out and lives hanging in the balance, Jack must decide how far he is willing to go in pursuit of the truth.

They promised redemption. They delivered lies.
Florida, November 1987—When sixteen-year-old Julie France McLaughlan is taken from her home by a controversial teen drug rehabilitation program called Breakthrough, her mother is told it’s for her own good. But Julie has never used drugs—and her sudden disappearance leaves her mother desperate for answers.
She turns to investigative reporter Jack Kendall.Jack quickly discovers that Julie’s younger brother has already been confined to Breakthrough, where humiliation, isolation, and psychological abuse are enforced as “treatment.”
Behind the program stands George Macy—a powerful Palm Beach developer whose influence has turned Breakthrough into a national movement praised by politicians and shielded by those sworn to regulate it.
As Jack digs deeper with fellow reporter and wife Bobbie Kendall, they uncover a network of corruption stretching from Florida’s Gulf Coast to the halls of Congress. Officials are bribed to look the other way. Records are concealed. And those who ask questions are silenced.
With time running short, Jack faces a dangerous choice: walk away—or risk everything to expose the truth and save the children trapped inside.
Breakthrough Lies is the fifth Jack Kendall Mystery—a powerful investigative thriller about deception, corruption, and one reporter’s relentless pursuit of the truth in the face of the twisted “tough love” treatment.

Who This Book May Speak To:
Readers who enjoy investigative thrillers, political corruption stories, journalism-centered fiction, and character-driven mysteries will find much to appreciate in Breakthrough Lies. It's particularly well suited for readers who prefer realistic, thought-provoking suspense over action-heavy thrillers.
Breakthrough Lies is not a light or cozy mystery. It is a powerful investigative thriller about truth, power, and the people harmed when institutions are protected instead of questioned.
My Thoughts on Breakthrough Lies
Breakthrough Lies is the second Jay B. Greene novel I have read, following Nokomis Hospital, and I found this one even stronger. While both books feature Jack Kendall and Greene's background in journalism, this story felt more balanced, more character-driven, and more emotionally engaging.
One of the strongest aspects of the novel is the way Jack has grown as a character. He is not written as a superhero or an unstoppable action hero. He is a reporter with a huge heart, a strong sense of justice, and a determination to keep digging when powerful people would rather the truth stay buried. That makes him easy to root for.
The supporting characters also feel more fully developed in this book. Jack's wife, Bobbie, adds depth to the investigation, and the people connected to Breakthrough help keep the stakes personal. I was especially intrigued by Richter and would be happy to see more of him in future books.
This is not a traditional whodunit. Instead, the suspense comes from following the evidence as Jack uncovers how far the corruption reaches. The story shows what can happen when greed, politics, and public image are valued more than human lives. Unfortunately, that is also what makes the premise feel so believable.
Greene does a good job of weaving the journalism into the action without letting it overtake the story. The investigative details are still important, but they serve the characters and the larger conflict. For me, that made Breakthrough Lies a stronger and more immersive reading experience.
In Conclusion
Breakthrough Lies is a gripping, unsettling, and thoughtful investigative thriller. It works well as a standalone, but readers who have followed Jack Kendall will also appreciate seeing his character continue to grow.
I recommend this one to readers who enjoy corruption exposés, investigative fiction, political thrillers, and stories about ordinary people willing to challenge powerful systems. It is a difficult subject, but Greene handles it with purpose, heart, and a clear respect for the pursuit of truth.
