For today's book review, I'm stepping into the emotionally intense world of Breathe for Me by Donna B. Comeaux. This romantic suspense novel begins with a dramatic river rescue that brings together two strangers devastated by grief, then draws them into a slow-burning relationship while danger follows close behind.

Robert and Lilly weren't easy characters for me to warm up to at first, but their guarded behavior gradually revealed how deeply loss had shaped them. With a delightful four-year-old, an increasingly menacing villain, and several twists I never anticipated, Breathe for Me ultimately became a compelling story of healing, hope, and second chances.

Robert Aaron Jaeger has lost the emotional strength to outlast his grief. Less than a month after an accident claimed his wife’s life, he travels to Colorado’s Glenwood Canyon intending to end his own. His plan changes when he discovers Lilly Radford in the freezing river and instinctively rushes to save her.

Lilly has been consumed by guilt since the death of her baby. After driving until her money and fuel are nearly gone, she finds herself at the Grizzly Creek Rest Stop—and at the same river where Robert has come to surrender to his pain.

By saving Lilly, Robert may also have saved himself. But when he returns to Seattle, a former employee named Zachary Butler follows close behind, determined to make Robert pay for getting him fired.

As Robert and Lilly struggle with grief, guilt, and an attraction neither is prepared to accept, danger moves steadily closer. Unless they can lower the walls surrounding their hearts, they may miss the possibility of a new life together—if Zachary doesn’t take it from them first.

My Thoughts

Breathe for Me begins with a rush of drama as Robert rescues Lilly from the freezing Colorado River. The story then slows to establish the characters, their histories, and the grief that brought both of them to that moment. Donna B. Comeaux provides plenty of detail throughout this portion of the novel, but the explanations rarely become tedious.

I initially found both Robert and Lilly difficult to warm up to. Each could seem guarded, self-centered, or frustrating during the first half of the book. As their stories developed, however, I realized those qualities reflected the emotional walls they had built around themselves. Their distance made sense in light of the guilt and devastating loss each carried.

Four-year-old Mary Elizabeth was an absolute delight. She is spoiled, precocious, mischievous, and often exactly what this emotionally heavy story needs. I especially enjoyed the Shirley Temple comparison. It captured her charm while adding a playful quality to her determination. Then again, most four-year-olds can become remarkably resourceful when a second glass of chocolate milk is at stake.

The storyline involving Zac, Zachary, and Ethel introduces the darkness needed to propel the suspense forward. I had some difficulty differentiating between Zac and Zachary at first, but their distinctions became clearer as I continued reading. The author steadily develops this part of the story until it becomes integral to the mounting danger.

There were also moments when the religious elements felt a little stronger than the surrounding story required. However, I knew before reading that Christian themes would be present, and faith supports the novel's larger ideas about hope, forgiveness, and redemption.

A few connections initially struck me as highly coincidental. Before long, though, the story persuaded me to accept them as part of its fictional world. Once I stopped questioning how everyone's paths crossed, I could settle into the unfolding romance and suspense.

The plot twists I didn't anticipate-and especially the shocking ending-ultimately raised my enjoyment of the novel. What begins as a story about two grieving people develops into something darker and more complicated, with enough unresolved possibility to leave me hoping Donna B. Comeaux has a sequel planned.

Final Thoughts

Breathe for Me blends grief, slow-burning romance, Christian themes, and psychological suspense in a story about two wounded people learning to see beyond their pain. Although Robert and Lilly took time to win me over, their emotional distance ultimately made their growth more meaningful. Mary Elizabeth brought warmth and humor to the darker story, while the unexpected twists and shocking conclusion left me eager for a sequel.
