Meet Pitney Scolan. Pit, for short. He's a decorated general and a venerated leader of the sprawling human race. He's protected his species' colonies from vicious native animal populations and hostile alien life. He's fiercely introverted, and he's really looking forward to retiring on his personal planet in the very near future.

Except…now he has to be a dog.

A daugment, to be specific: a cybernetically enhanced canine, previously the doting pet of Pit's biggest rival, General Tristan. It's the only way to escape certain assassination.

So Pit grudgingly allies himself with a pair of well-meaning scoundrels and sets sail for seedier space in hopes of escaping Tristan's clutches. Instead, he finds a galactic conspiracy to force him to make friends.

My thoughts on Daugment

Daugment New Cover Square

Daugment is an intriguing and fun sci-fi novel with great characters, a satisfying ending, and an action-filled plot that keeps you engaged from beginning to end. It’s a must-read for anyone looking for a fun and enjoyable book, not just for sci-fi fans.

A passage from the opening: “Pitney Scolan, HAG general, Human Authority Government. One more ceremony. One more day. Then he could take his well-earned retirement bonus from the Human Authority Government (a good three years’ spending money, at least) and finally, finally, set foot on his personal planet, Prowess. With its self-sustaining terraforming systems, Prowess would take care of herself, and he could live there alone, forever free of judgment and stupidity.”

While it seems simple, his plans are disrupted when he becomes a target and has to run for his life, relying on others for help, which is not his strong suit.

The book is a humorous and exciting science fiction story with elements of space opera, action, and adventure. The talking dogs that are part man and part cyber robots are just one example of the imaginative world-building in the book.

The narrative boasts a remarkable fusion of personas and beings that demonstrate lovable, terrifying, persistent, and unforgettable qualities. It’s evident that both humans and canines play an integral role in keeping the world turning.

August Niehaus takes the reader on an adventure not soon to be forgotten. Grab your copy of Daugment today and enjoy the escape from everyday life on Earth.

About August Niehaus

August Niehaus author image

In another lifetime, August Niehaus was a punk kid running a writing-themed e-zine in 2002 and participating in online survivor writing contests; these days, she’s a punk pseudo-adult with an office job and a studio of her own.

Her husband, friends, and job keep her tied to the misty Pacific Northwest of the U.S., and her insatiable love of stringing words together keeps her writing a little bit of everything every day.
