When Tameka visits her elderly aunt, birthday gift in hand, quirky Aunt Erma puts her to work. As she hangs an old photo, Tameka sees another picture of 1940's-era human computers and discovers that Aunt Erma was one of them!

She has lots of questions, but Aunt Erma's price for answers is one math problem each. Tameka keeps up, but the problems get more complex with each question.

Remembering the gift Tameka convinces her auntie to open it. The contents make both of them laugh and realize that they've learned something about each other.

My thoughts on Erma Does The Math

This is a delightful, educational children’s book combining many topics.

Erma Does The Math book cover image purple & green

Temeka learns that her aunt was once a human computer working at the Langley Nasa laboratory. This was an amazing feat for a black woman or any woman in that era.

Sprinkled throughout the story are math questions in which Temeka trades solutions for answers from her aunt. As the math problems get more difficult, Erma helps her niece work out how to reach the solutions.

I learned a lot myself by reading this informative book. The book teaches history, math, and science in a way that is easy for younger minds to connect with. I hope Erma has more to teach us in future children’s books.

I received a copy of the book for the tour. This review is my honest, unbiased opinion.
