My thoughts on Fabyan Place
A thought-provoking book looking at WW2 and the many racisms of the time.
Fabyan Place was not an easy read for me. It involved dedication and grit to read of such a horrifying time in history.
The setup is slow and deliberate during the opening of the book. Once I moved into the individual stories of Sonny and John, the pages turned much quicker. The characters are believable and the settings are extremely well-described making you feel like a part of the story.
This well-researched historical fiction novel will chill you to the bone with the atrocities of man upon man, especially during a war.
Fans of war stories, accurate historical fiction, and human nature will enjoy Fabyan Place.
I received a copy of the book for the tour. This review is my honest, unbiased opinion.

About Peter Angus
Peter Angus' goal in writing historical fiction is to provide the brisk suspenseful storytelling of Robert Harris combined with the detail and historical precision of Patrick O’Brian.
He spent his early years in New York City and from there it was working and living in Vienna, Belgrade, Warsaw, Moscow, and Paris before settling in his current base, London.
"Fabyan Place", his first novel, is drawn from his own recollections and his extensive study of WWII military history.

An Interview with Peter Angus
Which was the hardest character to write? The easiest?
To be honest, for me, my characters are all fairly easy to write. I just simply put people I know (or knew) into story situations and have them react as I think they would but in the extraordinary circumstances of my story. In many cases, I give them the same name as the character. Where I do have a struggle is with the outline and making sure all the pieces fit together.
What made you write a book about family members?
At a holiday dinner a few years back, someone asked me about my family at Christmas when I was growing up. After I shared the normal bits about my extended family, I expanded and recounted a story about my uncle that my grandmother told me when I was growing up. The story of him as a POW of the Germans, captured during the Battle of the Bulge. That story, as well as the stories (and souvenirs) my dad brought back from Europe, gave me an enduring interest in the war, mostly because of my family’s personal connection. The further stories, about my immigrant family, came from genealogical research and family lore
There are quite a few books out there about WWII…What makes yours different?
Three very important topics make it very different from other WWII books you will read.
There are very few realistic books written which portray in detail the trials of the American prisoners during the war. I think Fabyan Place does that with all the accuracy that I could muster.
The story also covers cover the war from the standpoint of the Quartermaster Corps: the soldiers who were the ‘guys in the background’ – the suppliers, the people who provided the fuel, food, ammo, and just about everything the fighters needed. Most stories you see out there are portrayed in terms of battles and life and death situations of the fighters in combat. This story covers the work of the troops that helped it happen.
Lastly, most people do not realize the contribution of the African American soldiers to both the quartermaster endeavors as well as their combat participation in both WWI and WWII and Fabyan Place delves into that as well.
Your book is set in many locales, but Fabyan Place is in Newark, New Jersey. Have you ever been there?
I’ve been to all of the countries portrayed in the book, but the story gets its start in Newark, New Jersey, where my mom and dad’s family lived at one time or another. They had long since moved away when I was born, but when I was growing up we drove back to the old neighborhood many times to see the landmarks and so my parents could reminisce and share with their children.
