“Suddenly angelic beings of light appeared. They said I was at a crossroad, and it was here where I had to make a choice . . .”
In 2022, forty-two-year-old Dr. Stormy Hera, a music professor at the University of Victoria, is serving a manslaughter sentence at Sunnydale Forensic Hospital in British Columbia. Although she can’t recall committing the crime, she feels strongly that she did the right thing.
In the hopes of jogging her memory and healing her soul, Stormy is tasked with writing her autobiography as part of her rehabilitation. Spanning the 1940s to 2026, and set in the Saskatchewan prairies, Olympia, Greece, and Canada’s West Coast, For Love and Mercy follows the lives of free-spirited Evangeline and Stormy herself—including a near-death experience that changes everything.
For Love and Mercy is a heartfelt story of love and loss, courage and forgiveness.

My thoughts on For Love and Mercy
For Love and Mercy By C. Ingrid Deringer tells the tale of three women; daughter, mother, and grandmother. The story setting include the Saskatchewan prairies, Olympia, Greece and the Canadian West Coast near Vancouver. It takes place during the years of 1940-2026.
The story reads like a true crime fiction autobiography. It’s gripping and tugs at the heartstrings. The characters are well-written, the mystery reels the reader in a page at a time. The relevant themes include love, loss, consequences, mental health, and family conflict.
A fictionalized memoir written by a patient in a mental hospital for murder, For Love and Mercy is perfect for fans of historical fiction and family sagas. It’s the type of book that stays with you for days after you finish it.
I received a copy of the book for the tour. This review is my honest, unbiased opinion.

Guest Post from C. Ingrid Deringer
IF I COULD BE A CHARACTER IN MY OWN BOOK
During one of my author readings, the host asked me “If you could be a character in your novel For Love and Mercy, which one would it be?” I thought about it for a minute and my first thought was Stormy, the main character. She has some funny quirks – she is a bit of a foodie, a little snobby, likes dressing up in glitzy clothes – a bit shallow. But through her struggles she really grows as a character into someone who develops a deep understanding of herself and others and then strives to become a better person. Very admirable.
But then I thought about Evangeline, Stormy’s mother. When she was young, she had no fear what so-ever and she has an insatiable appetite for adventure and knowledge – but when I thought about it, Evangeline and I shared too many of the same qualities. Who wants to play someone who is similar to yourself? What fun is that?
I ended up answering that I would like to be Valentino! I was surprised by my answer when it popped out of my mouth. But the first word that came into my head was “fun!” I mean wouldn’t it be more fun being a handsome shy opera singer who is so kind and totally understands what unconditional love is all about? To be in his shoes when he realizes he finds the love of his life – his soulmate? And to even feel his pain and devastation when he learns his life is falling apart?
I went on to tell the audience that Valentino has such dignity, something I admire about him and how I would like to know what it feels like to be another gender. I told them about how I fell in love with Valentino and how readers have said the same thing – how they fell in love with him too. “And besides,” I said, “He is nothing like me in real life – I am anything but shy, nor a history geek, nor a sweet gentle soul that is overly generous.” So I think it would awesome to be a sweet kind, gentle eccentric opera singer. Why not?
