Friday Finds 8 October 2021 | Books, Pumpkins, Apples, and GIVEAWAYS!
Hello and welcome to the Friday Finds 8 October 2021 edition. I hope you’re planning for a great weekend! I know I am. I’m visiting with a friend and one of our grandsons is coming for his much delayed birthday sleepover. That always means blanket forts and making special treats. The last time he stayed, he spent all weekend coloring pictures and when his parents came to pick him up, he had set up an art gallery complete with open and closed signs.
This week’s Author of the Week is an Indie Author and friend of the blog, Pamela Parente! Here is my review of her debut book Paper Walls.
Let’s move on to the Friday Finds 8 October 2021 I hope you enjoy them. Be sure to leave a comment with your favorite from this week. It’s about time for my fall refresh, so let’s chat about what you would like to see in the upcoming months here in the Friday Finds.
Friday Finds 8 October 2021 – Books
California, 1862. In an obscure and faraway corner of the new state, a military officer struggles to keep the peace between local Natives and remote settlers. Lieutenant George Crook also works to uphold a truce among the untrusting tribe of local Indians and his own men, soldiers who are far from home and out of place in the isolated backcountry.
Timothy Snyder’s New York Times bestseller On Tyranny uses the darkest moments in twentieth-century history, from Nazism to Communism, to teach twenty lessons on resisting modern-day authoritarianism. Among the twenty include a warning to be aware of how symbols used today could affect tomorrow (“4: Take responsibility for the face of the world”), an urgent reminder to research everything for yourself and to the fullest extent (“11: Investigate”), a point to use personalized and individualized speech rather than clichéd phrases for the sake of mass appeal (“9: Be kind to our language”), and more.
In this graphic edition, Nora Krug draws from her highly inventive art style in Belonging —at once a graphic memoir, collage-style scrapbook, historical narrative, and trove of memories—to breathe new life, color, and power into Snyder’s riveting historical references, turning a quick-read pocket guide of lessons into a visually striking rumination. In a time of great uncertainty and instability, this edition of On Tyranny emphasizes the importance of being active, conscious, and deliberate participants in resistance.
Whether you’re looking for a Halloween book for toddlers or an interactive book for preschoolers, Don’t Push the Button! A Halloween Treat is a must-have for any household!
From the brilliant mind of author and illustrator, Bill Cotter comes one of the year’s best Halloween books for kids. Everyone knows that trick-or-treating is the best part of Halloween. But that one house looks kind of scary…wait, why are you walking toward the creepy house?! Whatever you do, do NOT ring that doorbell!
