Author Interview

Gina Rae:  René, what did you want to be when you grew up? I imagine it has something to do with writing.

René: It did, Gina Rae. I wanted to be a famous poet or actress and travel the world. Writing a novel would come later.

Gina Rae:  What’s your favorite breakfast food?

René: Oh my God, I am a country girl, straight from the Georgia woods. My dad was a truck driver/farmer, and my mom was a stay-at-home wife with seven kids. By today’s standards, we might be considered low income. However, our meals were not. My mom prepared fried pork chops and brown gravy, scrambled eggs with cheese, grits, homemade biscuits, and fresh-squeezed orange juice. Although it is rarely prepared, it is still one of my most favorite breakfast meals.

Gina Rae:  That’s quite a feast! I’m salivating just thinking about it. If you could invite one celebrity to dinner, who would it be, and what would you cook?

René:  Let’s see. I would invite Oprah Winfrey. I always wanted to meet her, and I know she likes food as much as I do. I’d cook roasted chicken, country dressing, fresh collard greens, and pecan-crusted sweet potato casserole. I’d prepare my signature lattice-crusted apple pie served hot with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream. We’d talk about living and growing up in the country in Alabama and Georgia and our latest writing projects.

Gina Rae:  I think Oprah would love that! Rene, what is the best part of your day?

René:  I love, love mornings! I get out of bed before my Ragdoll cat Coco Kimba Mufasa and my husband. The house is quiet. Most mornings, around 8:00 am, I sit at my dinner table and look out my patio door. It has a view of giant evergreen trees. I think of the goodness of our Creator and enjoy the morning light with my favorite coffee mug inscribed with “I will walk by faith even when I cannot see,” sipping my favorite brew of coffee. I prepare a quick bowl of oatmeal with raisins and wheat toast. I read the Google news on my Ipad. Stretch a few minutes. Then, I spend a couple of hours writing.

Gina Rae:  Share something about yourself most people don’t know.

René:  I’ve written two collections of poetry and a stage play under another pen name.

Gina Rae:  I’ve heard about Haiku, a Japanese poetry form. Can you tell us more about them and share one you’ve penned?

René:  Yes. A Haiku is a light and simple poetry that uses no more than 17 syllables. It has three unrhymed lines, with five, seven, and five syllables, respectively. Here’s one of mine entitledPrayer Changes Things”:

So you prayed to Him.

You could not do it yourself.

The answer came today.

Gina Rae:  Thank you for helping us get to know you better. Good luck with your new novel, Grace Under Siege
