My thoughts on Her Previous Self

Her Previous Self is part of Anne Allen’s Guernsey Novels series; however, it works perfectly as a stand-alone read.

The characters are well-defined, leading the reader to love or despise them.

The mystery is unique and captivating. Time-slip is an excellent way to describe what happens to Lucy. It’s not a full-on time travel tale but is firmly rooted in Lucy’s ability to slip into Mary’s mind and life to solve the mystery of Mary’s disappearance.

Along with the mystery, there is a theme of recovering from depression due to the death of a child and the abrupt ending of a marriage. I thought this plotline was handled well and with great care.

The author includes a budding romance in the periphery, which adds another layer to the story. I found the connection and growing love between Lucy and her grandfather to be touching and heart-warming.

The isle of Guernsey is almost a character in the book. The depiction of life in Guernsey, past and present, was informative & made me long to visit the area.

Whether you have read other novels in this series or not, I highly recommend Her Previous Self to lovers of historical fiction, time travel, mysteries, and more.
