In The Secrets of the Hidden Workforce, Lisa Toth tells readers her story of falling in love with a population of people often overlooked and under valued. Toth not only saw value in the differently-abled, but also their potential to bring something society needed to the table. Always one to root for the underdog, she saw a way she could help by identifying the right jobs and find onramps for them to join the workforce. Toth created a staffing agency to do just this - help this gifted group of people find work that they can be proud of and find fufilling.

The book is written in a memoir style, full of stories and lessons learned. Be prepared to be inspired as you learn about the good, the bad and the ugly. Toth shares it all with refreshing honesty, while making a compelling case for embracing diversity and inclusivity for this often underemployed population.

My Thoughts on The Secrets of the Hidden Workforce

In “The Secrets of the Hidden Workforce,” Lisa Toth invites readers into her personal journey of discovering the immense value within a segment of society that is often overlooked and undervalued. It’s not just a book; it’s a heartfelt narrative of love and advocacy for the differently-abled community. Toth’s passion shines through as she recognizes their worth and the unique contributions they bring to the table.

As someone who’s always rooted for the underdog, Toth saw an opportunity to make a difference by creating a staffing agency dedicated to connecting these talented individuals with meaningful employment opportunities. Through anecdotes and real-life experiences, she paints a vivid picture of the challenges and triumphs encountered along the way.

What makes this book truly impactful is Toth’s unfiltered honesty. She doesn’t shy away from discussing the hurdles faced or the moments of doubt. Yet, amidst the struggles, there’s an unwavering belief in the power of diversity and inclusivity. Each page is filled with inspiration, urging readers to reevaluate their perceptions and embrace the richness of human differences.

“The Secrets of the Hidden Workforce” is not just informative; it’s a catalyst for change. It reminds us that every individual deserves a chance to thrive and contribute to society. At just 144 pages, it’s a quick yet profound read that leaves a lasting impression. Thought-provoking and eye-opening, this book is a must-read for anyone seeking to understand the challenges faced by differently abled individuals and the transformative impact of acceptance and opportunity.

“Ants and Rubber Tree Plants”

We all go through difficult times, it’s part of being alive. They can take us to dark places, but they can also help us find a strength within us we never knew we had. My career, but also my life, art, and passion, has been filled with a series of ups and downs. A roller coaster of memories, adventures, beauty, and pain.

I help people who live with disabilities get jobs. I wish I could put into words the joy it brings me because it doesn’t feel like a job at all. The people I work with, no matter the length of time it takes to get them their opportunity, we go on that journey together. That journey is filled with hills and valleys, unfortunately, more valleys than hills… because they experience more rejection than acceptance.

One client in particular, we’ll call her Laura to protect her name, had a great set of skills and was ready to work. We spent weeks, almost months trying to find her a job. It seemed we had tried every place imaginable and it started to feel hopeless… then I thought about ants and rubber tree plants and smiled.

For that to make sense you have to know my favorite quote, or rather my favorite cartoon and song to think about, “Just what makes that little old ant, think he’ll move that rubber tree plant? Anyone knows an ant can’t move a rubber tree plant! But he’s got high hopes, he’s got high hopes. He’s got high, apple pie in the sky hopes! So, any time you’re gettin’ low, ‘stead of lettin’ go, just remember that ant… Oops, there goes another rubber tree plant!”

Throughout difficult times in my life, when problems seem unsolvable or a challenge seems too difficult, I think of ants pulling up rubber tree plants and high hopes. It immediately brings me joy and inspires me to think of creative solutions. It brings me hope.

It seemed like every workplace we went to was one rubber tree plant in our way after another, and we were these small ants struggling to pull them out. But ants, when they work together, can move things significantly bigger than themselves. We didn’t give up, and eventually, we found her an amazing job. We had high hopes.

With high hopes, the circumstances aren’t always easy, but it inspires determination, and we were determined to succeed and see our goal through. So, if you find yourself in a difficult season of your life or an obstacle seemingly too difficult to overcome, just think about ants moving rubber tree plants, keep your hopes high, and don’t give up.
